I took a couple photos of my two Phoenix cockerels Phil and Phinneus, they're almost 8 months old. I'm curious to get some opinions on them. I also am curious to know what everyone thinks of the lacing on Phinneus' breast. Is that just a variation on the Silver Duckwing? Also his tail isn't as full or as long as Phil's. They're kept together and fed the same diet is it a matter of a difference in genetics and or slower maturation?

Where did you get them from ? Even before I red your post, I looked at the pics and I noticed that Phinneus looked more like a Birchin than a Silver Duckwing, then I read your post and saw that you mentioned him having lacing in the breast which I didnt see before I read it, but that breast lacing is a characteristic of birchins, and also notice that he doesnt have that silver triangle at the end of his wings like Phil does and that is also a Birchin characteristic. So Im thinking you lucked out and got a Birchin somehow. Where did you get him from ?

Here you can see the differeces in Birchin and Silver Ducking in OEBGs

Rareroo thank you! Their chick down was completely different from each other (Phil was chipmunk and Phinneus was a sooty grey/black) and then they feathered out so similarly. I had just chalked it up to variance within the coloration. I hatched them from eggs I got from Boggy Bottom Bantams. They are the only two that hatched but I'm hoping to get some more this spring. I'm guessing Birchen is not a common color for Phoenix?

yep, you ended up with a silver dw and a silver birchen. I ended up with one myself this year from that breeding, just need a mate now for it too. Yes birchen are rare in the phoenix birds, not many have them.
As for the tail fullness, like any other bird charactoristic, it just varys from bird to bird, not all will have super massive tails, but really, he is looking good, should fill in nice by next spring. Often the rare colors feather slower than the more common ones.

Oh Ok that makes sense since I hatched a Birchin pullet from Aubreys eggs. Hopefully she can be the mate for your roo when ever I can get back over there. .

I posted this info on the longtail breed thread you listed. My birds flock to me, even fly to get grapes, maters, canalope, ect from my hands. They are very energetic, but also very docile and smart. I've trained mine to jump up on my knee to get treats and to "sit pretty". Hope that helps some
