Post Phoenix Pics Please

I'm curious on what is the best feed choice for phoenix chickens? I heard they need extra protein for tail growth and was wondering what percent would be appropriate.

That's a good question! My baby phoenix will be here next week, so I'm not much help, but interested in finding out as well. My current flock gets layer crumble- they also free range and get fed a nice quantity of table/garden scraps each day. When there aren't any meat scraps to give, I usually add a can of my cat's wet food for protein. To anyone with experience- would this be enough protein for a phoenix?

When mine get a little older, I'll be offering high protein feed (fermented to boost soluble protein and vitamin levels) with cooked rice and high protein treats like fresh mealworms, soft cat food, eggs, etc. But I'm a newbie too, so listen to what the pro's have to say.

Thanks for sharing, Tabatha! I haven't tried fermenting yet, but I think I'll be learning :) I think what I'm doing now will be okay until cold weather gets here but I like to think ahead. I like to give my flock extra protein for egg production anyhow, and if I can find a feeding regimen that will work for all of them, that would be perfect. Since the phoenix I'm getting are a new project breed line, I'll be surprised if the tails pass the 2 foot mark ( they say 2-5 feet for these guys). No matter what the max length is- I can't wait to get them!

I love the fermented food. Less waste, better for them, lower food cost...I won't ever go back. I feed it to my entire flock...just have to figure out what I'm gonna do to keep it from freezing in the winter. I'm new to phoenix too. I have chicks from rambob59 and then a pair (can't figure out what kind of project they were part of though) with 4 chicks. I can't wait to see them all full grown...and to add more asap!
