Post Phoenix Pics Please

Phoenix aren't supposed to molt for 3-4 years. Are you sure he isn't a gamebird? I ask because his comb is dubbed and molted at a year old. Some gamefowl have sone pretty long tails to.

Wow, this thread is huge! It says "Post Phoenix Pics Please" so here are some of mine from this past springs hatch. They are anywhere from 7 to 9 months old now. I am not planning on showing them so I am raising them in a big group in an outside grow pen so their tail feathers are pretty beat up (I keep picking up long tail feathers lying around on the ground).

I am raising them for the flytie angle except that I do not have the mindset of a fly fisherman. They are so quick to boast how they practice 'catch and release' when they fish and brag about how conservation minded they are but they sure don't mind that the poor chicken had to loose its life for the hackle to tie their flies! I personally plan on just plucking feathers as-needed.

I am new at this but I am interested in working more on the crele variation. Can someone tell me if you cross a crele with a crele, do you get 100% crele? I thought I read in this thread that there is a method/formula to actual get the crele variation and then I also thought I read that you can cross a barred with a BB Red to get a crele looking variation. What's the difference? I know you can tell the variation of a rooster once they feather out but how do you know what the variation is of the hens? They are not as easy to tell. Is there certain things you look for? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Glad I found this thread.

@nikki1496 oh really? I have a hen who will be 4 in may and still hasn't molted. Everything else I have is 2 years old and still no molt. But I did have 1 hen who's tail fell off and grew completely in 4 weeks. Other than that everything is still in first feathering.

@Shawna89 update some pictures and maybe some of legs and face to be able to tell more. Because gray hatch gamefowl look very similar to phoenix but their tails are higher angle and don't normally drag on floor but they do get long still. I've also seen people dub their phoenix so you never know haha.

@dboranch for fly tie you want to select the breeding for the genetic saddles and hackles. When I breed my creles for it, I've done male crele to Bbred hen. I got 1 crele pullet, 1 crele male, 1 bbred male. So in this instance if you want to keep getting crele all the time, you want to breed the crele to crele to eliminate BBRed. Because Bbred is a recessive trait, it should be easy to eliminate from offspring.
