What kind of housing do you guys have for your guys bantams? Im thinking about what my set up is going to be, i think i am going to make it easy and do a 4x4 floor plan, that is 8ft high with a slope to it. The run would probally be the same but covered and the floor will be dug down a foot and wire lined with sand on top. Would this work for a trio of bantam phoenixes?

Working on getting black phoenix.
I crossed my regular phoenix to a white faced black spanish hen, and so far this is how they are looking,
but i have 3 pullets from them now that are pure black, so i now i am trying to think on how to cross those to get more phoenix blood in and more black to come out.
I did not think of the second stage

Just FYI you do know Black Phoenix already exist dont you ? But if you just want to remake them your best bet would be breeding Whites or Silver Duckwings to Black or Blue Dutch Bantams and working from there as Dutch Bantams are pretty close to phoenix as far as the earlobes and leg colors and all that.

LOL Yers i know that there are blacks already, from what i have researching they are very hard to come by, I am trying to make my own line of black.

Also i dont want to use bantams, mine are Large fowl.
So far they are comeing out with the right color earlobes and leg colors look pretty good.
What i am hopeing is that they dont carry teh white face

Thanks for the info

Dutch are pretty close, though and black pheonix are gorgeous. couldn't you breed Duckwings with poor coloring until eventually you had a pure black.

Thats what i figured, i was thinking on breeding these together and see how the off spring of those come out, i am thinking the color would fade away from the line.

Or you could just get some blacks from me this year. I have one of T-M import hens that I will be breeding this year, wont have many to spare til next year, but may have a couple, would help you out a ton on them.

that's right too, any time you want to outcross on phoenix, dutch are the preferred breed to use.

even though i have large fowls?

my black hen is from Toni Maries German Scubert line, and just got a black roo from Cy Hyde (he has some color to his hackel and saddle though )
All these I have are bantams though, There should be pics of all of them in the earlier pages of this thread.

I was thinking you said they were bantam, but that was the mottled one , not you.
Dutch would still work though, you'd just have to breed back up for size, once you got a true solid black of any size, you can breed it with pretty much any of your standards to gain back the size, yet keep phoenix qualities and not tarnish the color.
Ducth is what most all breeders use when creating new phoenix colors, but mainly in bantams size, will have to check to see what most use for standard size. Several have used leghorns I know, but not sure what all colors are available in them to work with.

regardless of breed, For best black coloring, use solid colored birds, white, blue, lavender, etc, not the duckwings as you will end up with a lot of leakage with those. And the closest to type as possible, white ear lobes, slate legs, single comb, tail really doesnt matter, as it will take several generations to get that back right anyway.
Cy told me he was on year 8 with these lavenders I got from him, and they still arent perfect.

Cy's lavenders, I will be breeding over some others to increase my black population and blood lines this spring too. They will be crossed to his whites I got, this will give blacks the first year, then when I back breed them, it should make those lavender tails really pop, as his white is of onagadori decent, that's what he recommended I do anyway for both colors.
