To reliably find all the standards, you have to buy the book. A lot of stuff on -line is inaccurate, and the APA and ABA websites dont list the standards on line, they want to sell the book, lol
case in point, the thing on phoenix you found up there. Phoenix have never once been the big longtail Japanese bird everyone says they are, that's the onagadori. They are the one the Japanese spend countless centuries working with and get the 12-20 foot tails. Phoenix are a breed of Germany and American decent. They were not found anywhere in Asia.
As for the difference in sizes, yes the size is it. Pretty sure it's still the same colors for both, though I havent checked in a couple years, but think in both, it's still just bb red, silver duckwing, gold duckwing, and now white too.
I know the breed was never capable of that kind of tail length but I find it fascinating that that piece of misinformation has been passed along for so long. The book where I got that little excerpt from was written in 1899!
Looks like I'll need to get my hands on the SOP book then so that I can try to do my birds justice.
@Peachick, Hi!
yewa, know what you mean, every where you look, hatcheries, on line etc, it seems everyone says 20 foot tails and Janpan as an origin, just not the case on either, they all have them confussed with onagadori
I have a dog show and poultry friend that raises Ibizan... Im a Belgian person.
I dont really show my birds, but since I have shown dogs for 20 years , breeding my birds to the standard is very important to me.
The white phoenix that I have and probably what most of us have is or was a mix of the various longtails.... so I get an assortment of types. Some of mine, have peacombs, and some have green legs. If and when I pen a trio for breeding I choose the best combs, legs, earlobes, and of course tail set. Its a nice breed to work with since the hens lay a great amount of eggs! They are also fantastic moms. Since I want mine to freerange I often find a hen sitting on a clutch of eggs somewhere..... or one will show up with a bunch of babies..... I love it and that is why I have them living free. However, its hell on the boys tails. My longtails live with various other birds, peafowl, geese and goats.... who step on long white tails that drag on the ground. I have stepped on a few tails myself. So consequently tails get broken. removed and are dirty. I dont know how long my birds tails can get. My oldest white male is probably 4 years old but his tail set is too high, I have only seen it get maybe 3 foot long. The juveniles in the photos I posted above are looking promising. Im anxious to see how their tails look this summer.
Yes all white phoenix are recessive white meaning they are masking some other color, usually silver duckwing, some times birchen, so you do end up getting a few of those popping up. True ones though shouldnt be producing anything off standard though like green legs or peacombs, those are definitely mixed if they do, with the similarities in the various longtailed breeds it is often very hard to tell by looks a lone though, and yep, a lot of breeders use various other breeds to try to improve on their type or color, so you do often end up with a mixed bag in the phoenix. That's why it's important to buy from high end breeders on them if you want to be producing perfect birds, it's worth it in the long run. Otherwise, they are perfect just like they are

Misty, he looks awsome to me, very nice bird, correct everything looks like from what I can see.
Sure, I am starting to get eggs off the whites now, dont have any birds for sell, but will be glad to get you some more eggs if you need them.
Thanks Aubrey, he's the only roo I have that's not related to your group, so yes hun, I do need more whites from you so I can keep trucking w/o any 'bottle-necking' of lines. Your white hen hatched last year, is a laying fool. I get an egg a day from her while some of the other ladies are giving me an egg ever 2 days (slackers).

haha, yep, I hate slackers, LOL
Will be glad to hook you up with some more in a few weeks once they get a little more predicatable. That white line has been excellent layers for me since I got them a couple years back, like you said, once they get going, it's pretty much an egg a day all threw til late Nov or so. Hope all these new colors I just got do the same, the lavenders have been pretty darn good at it too for winter, only have a pair, and just got them 3 weeks ago and already have a dozen eggs cooking off her and it mid winter... fingers crossed, she'll do good.
Oh, I also have some wites now from Cy , not going to let many of them go as they are onagadori decendants and I want to work on that non molting deal with them, but might can get you a few off them too for yet another line on your whites too. Will stay in touch, dont forget me on those lemons too!!!
I am sooooooo excited! I just have to share. I called Cy Hyde the other day and I am going to be getting 5 of his birds! I also got 11 eggs from Aubrey in the mail today. He sent 12, but the post office must have played soccer with the box and 1 was cracked. I can't wait! I will post pics as soon as I get them. I'm getting a pair of whites and a trio of his blue project Phoenix bantams. I am spending a small fortune, but it should be worth it!
