Now where have I seen that rooster??? HMMMM> Let me think...
Not bad for making it through his first year molt. Pics look great.. Wait till you see the splash red cockerel.

The white roo from Amanda has quite the fan club here, too. After I took the last photos, I did put him in one of the smaller pens with just three hens and tall perches to help keep his feathers in good shape. Before winter I'm taking the majority of my old silver duckwing Phoenix chickens to the sale, keeping just a handful that I think may turn out nicer than their parents (parents going to the sale as well). The BBR's I got a few months ago along with this rooster are so much better quality.

I breed for tails. This means nonmolting feathers, mutant sickles, (extra feathering) , saddles, and a good bird usually has more than one oil duct above the tail. Though not always. I actually raise phoenix, but am breeding for onagadori characteristics. Long story. Toni- Marie's book is good for explanation or you can look up onagadori on onagadori.net or at onagadori.com. Alot of genes go into the ancestrial breed that was used to create phoenix. That breed is the onagadori!! My personal FAV.

I would guess the extra oil benefits the feather durability and softness, making them less likely to break?
