Post Phoenix Pics Please

interesting to see this discussion today because last night my favorite phoenix 'the Flying Dutchman" somehow got his three longest tail feathers wrapped around and pulled out on his roost. one was a little bit bloody on the tip. poor fellow :( im going to try the pvc roost for him tonight.

I have learned with the long tail feathers that a 2 x 4 laid flat works best. anything round can cause their feathers to wrap around it. A square surface will not usually let the happen.

That what I use now too Travis, works great and havent had any tangles since.

Mandy ,
Thant's good to know about the ginger and garlic, hadnt heard of those yet

good looking phoenix there. PM me if you want some eggs. I have bb in both sizes. New pics on my website of all of them

This is a "phoenix" stag. His daddy is from my Duplex comb Phoenix line and his mother is a blend of onagadori, phoenix, ohiki, and totenko. I have two of this brothers but he has the most neck and back hackle AND the most tail length of the three. I have two bbred pullets I am going to keep. I was trying to get some duplex comb birds from this cross but luck was not on my side, so I will have to just try again.

I wish someone was interested in these three roosters, I do not need them. I am not a huge fan of silver. I think they will feather out nicely, though. The only problem is that they are white legged and do not have a whole lot of white in the earlobes. Someone with green legged phoenix that wanted to make them blue legged could get some good use out of these birds.

It is not letting me post it as an IMG so you just have to click the link...sorry.

How do you keep them from struggling to get off the stand and "hanging" themselves by their feet?

I like to rear my roosters separately.. You can keep them in individual pens as Aubrey suggested.. I would however use shavings, not hay.. Hay can get caught in the tail and wadded up if the tail is very long.. This also only works if the tail is not above 5 ft or so long. when it gets longer, they can break feathers jumping up to the roost which will need to be high enough not only for the poop, but so they can't jump to the ground while their tail is draped on the roost and then jump back up on the other side of the roost.. Then they are tied to the roost by their tail.. "have had it happen".. I would suggest hanging feeders or waterers.. you don't want anything in the bottom of the pen that they can wrap their tail around.. Most importantly, like Aubrey suggested, start with good stock.. A nice calm bird that you have handled well.. If they go crazy and run into the walls, they can damage their feathers.. Stress can make them molt and being too active can also according to some breeders. Be careful with the greens.. Too many in the cabbage family can cause a low thyroid and kill the bird.. TOTAL AGREEMENT ON KEEPING THEM DRY.. You can also get a good whitening shampoo for horses at your local feedstore or Tractor Supply.. This will help if you have a white bird. Not as necessary on a dark tailed bird (duckwing for example).. Oil the feathers also. And like Aubrey said, If you are serious, Go the ol tomebaku route.. It doesn't have to be complicated, it just has to keep the bird from damaging his tail.. There are examples of tomebaku on the internet.. Study the pics and go for it! I have reared them on pvc stands with some success...

I was out looking at chicks today, we have 2 whites left and a bunch of silvers and goldens. One of the whites has a bright salmon breast coming in making it look pyle. Could pyle just pop up? Not sure which pen it came from either, it was either from the white cockerel to silver mother or golden pair

LOL>> I put the roosters up on a stand after they are fully gentle at about 6 months of age.. I leave them tied under supervision for about a month or so.. The rooster in the photo is not tied.. he still wears his ties on his legs, but he is just sitting on the stand.. You don't have to keep them tied after a while.. They just stay there....... Seems to work good.. I have a friend who uses a long rooster cord.. If they jump down, they are just on the ground..

silver pyles will look like that on the hens, all white with a salmon breast
Now my Hyde hens look that way too, they are recessive cream pyles .
But no it has to come from something, shouldnt just pop up. If it's pyle you have to have a dominate white bird in the mix somewhere.
Not sure if a recessive white over bb or golden would give the salmon breast or not. It doesnt over silver??
