Post Phoenix Pics Please

well we've all see tails and saddles get wrapped up in wierd ways... Today when I was feeding up I noticed a few pens down one of my black males was stumbling around and acting as if he was dying... wasnt sure what the heck was going on. Had had a fairly bad day today anyway, figured just chaulk it up as par for the course to be loosing a good male. When I made it to his pen I about died laughing.
In some ungodly way, he had gotten his saddles tied in a knot around the base of his comb, and had pretty much hog tied his head to his butt.... never in all my days have I seen that one. Popped it off his comb and he had the most confussed look of relief on his face. I dont think he's sure how he did it either!! LOL

Had to have been preening or something and got them over his head?? Anyway, he's happy and free now. Sure glad he wasnt dying, he's my best Schubert black I have right now..... Think the girls might have done it to him

??

anyway had to share that one.

I place my incubator in my very small "bedroom" since I don't live at home anymore since I go to college
there are two vents... after I close the vents the incubator has not been fluctuating as much anymore :)

the eggs are on lock down... hatch should be tomorrow :)))

question: the reason why an incubator should not be opened during lock down is because of the membrane may cause suction. is that true?
also how do you deal with incubating when some of the eggs in the same incubator need to be turned while there are others which are on lock down.. ?

thankssss

Yup that is true and Idk how to answer the other problem. Usually that's why people have a hatcher to move the eggs into the hatcher so the others can keep turning.

no it doesnt cause a suction to the membrane. What it does is let all your humidity out, by doing this, it drys the membrane to the chicks once they have pipped. They wont do it unless they have pipped usually. But all that wet sticky mess inside will act like cemete when it drys on them. If they get stuck they cant turn to finish the way out in this case if you dont catch it, they just eventually die in the shell.
The reverse can be true too if you have it too humid they can pip and literally drown in the shell for excess water build up around the pipped hole. If you notice beeds of water on the top glass windows in the bator, you need to pull the plugs on the vents and let some out. I will usually open the whole thing if I have a bunch hatching at the same time. That's what causes it in mine, all the wet open shells letting out tons of moisture. Usually isnt an issue unless you have the thing slap full of eggs all hatching at the same time.

I usually have some Hovas or the Sportsman hatching trays for all that. But I do open them from time to time. It's not as God aweful as a lot of folks make it out to be. I also open and pull shells as they hatch to avoid that super high humidity spike.
Just turn the remaining eggs 2 times a day and leave it alone other than that and you'll be just fine as long as you have the water trays full. It comes back up in just a few minutes after you close it. The big Sportsman I have pretty much is fully back up to proper humidity levels in about 2 minutes. Just open it, do it quick and close it back and you'll be fine

Good luck with them
