This is my broody hen...actually it's the DUCK, not the CHICKEN!

This is my 11 month old Muscovy, Reba! I actually filled the incubator on Wednesday (the 7th) and Reba decided she was picking that day to do some incubating of her own! I've seen her get up once so I slipped her a little food and water and slapped up some bars to keep my pesky turkeys from crawling in there and bothering her.

She doesn't mind when the chickens go in though, this one and one other little red hen go there to lay everyday and she just keeps stealing their eggs. They refuse to use the other nesting boxes, so I pulled the ONE whole duck egg in there and left Reba with 6 marked chicken eggs and we'll see what happens. (The muscovy egg would take 2 weeks more than the chicken egg to hatch so I figured for a first timer we'd give her some 3 week eggs.

My son was pretty concerned that she'd be angry when her babies hatched and they were chickens, but I reminded him that muscovies neither quack or swim so she probably wouldn't notice! haha

I think it's cool that she may be hatching the same day I'm in the house hatching!

Here's a picture of my broody Buff Orpington. This is the third or fourth time she has gone broody this summer. We finally put some eggs under her for the first time and she hatched out all 6 eggs. We had to take the babies out because there was no way for them to get out of the nesting box. So when she went broody again 2 weeks after the first hatch we made her a new next at ground level so that she can raise these on her own! We affectionately call her Mama.
