Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

another newbie question, what does it mean when you call a bird "cuckoo"?

cuckoo refers to the patterning. its almost barred but not as distinct. comes in assorted colors

Thanks for the 'smut' information, that's interesting. I have lots of other nice young pullets here (IMHO!), so I think I'll probably sell those 2 'smut' pullets. I'm just getting into working with Orpingtons, so those advanced genetics are still a bit above my head right now

But I want to do things as right as I can. I have some eggs coming from Linda Hamid shortly, can't wait for those!

wilds of pa - beautiful photos, beautiful bird. I have a cuckoo too and by your photos I would say yours is a male, how old is it? Mine doesn't have those wispy long feathers near the tail (yet) mine is only 2 months young. I actually just made a board last night about my cuckoo that includes photos if you would like to compare: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=6808797

My Buffy, shown here with Roxie, is the sweetest of my chickens. All of mine were a fluff-grab at the feedstore in utter ignorance. I suspect none of mine will resemble best-of-breed. I think Buffy's color is enchanting.

My girls are happy, flappy, hoppy yard ornaments that eat bugs.

I now know why everyone loves this breed. I have two Buff Orps and one of them has decided I'm her human. They are almost four weeks old, but earlier this week, she somehow decided I was hers. My co-worker and I own the chickens together and they live on her property, which is just one street over from me. I introduced them to oatmeal on Tuesday and that must have done the trick for Mrs. Beasley. Now, when I enter the coop, she is usually pecking at my leg for attention and if I happen to stand on one leg and have the other raised, she will hop up on it. Earlier today I had bent down to get something, heard wings fluttering and felt a thump on my back. It was Mrs. Beasley. She then worked her way to my shoulder where she thought she should give me a "peck" on the cheek. Who ever knew a person could fall in love with a chicken. I can't wait until my grown daughter meets them tomorrow. She isn't so sure she'll be in love with them, but I'm determined to change her mind. I'll post a picture or two when I get some new ones.

I know just enough to be dangerous when breeding projects. I have heard one needs a Salmon Breasted Duck Wing to make a true CRELE. I also have some widdle Cuckoo/Buff Orp mixes. The plan is to take them to this chick next year. I have two of this type of chick. IS this a Silver Duckwing? I know there is little Red on the breast, but prolly not enough to make an official Salmon breast. But, I am still very new to all these types of varieties and how to properly identify them. In any event I will stick to my plan.
Just another BUS decendent.

Another project I have going on is the nearly extinct JEWBILEE Project. I had a pair of Speckled Sussex and Buff Orp mixes. One male and one female. They had about a dozen chick together before the male was sent to the farm. Then I put her with a Black Orp. Now some are starting to grow up a bit.
