Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Thanks Jim. I was looking at my BO pullet who is ~ 22 weeks old and I see that she has some yellow pigmentation with pink undertones on her legs, and her beak is yellow. I'm gonna assume it will take more time for the beak to flush out then the legs. I've noticed the skin under the feathers is a true pink on all the orps, but the fat deposits, which can be seen through the skin is very yellow.

Red corn!! I didn't think of that!

This whole experience has me wanting to set up a homeschool experiment: To have a control group of white legged chicks and yellow legged chicks fed non corn feed, another group of white and yellow legged chicks fed yellow corn and anther group of same size/type fed the blue corn and document the changes. The nice thing about the experiment is you can proof it, by removing the corn and watching the colors flush out. Could call it something like: Nutritional methods of influencing phenotypical characteristics in fowl. It would be great for my older boy's 4H skills and my younger boy's science mind... but I'd have to make quite a few new pens.

LOL...Well let us know what you find out..I have heard several old timers feed thier buff orps those red pepper flakes to enhance the buff color and they swear by it..I dont have any buffs so have never really had to try anything like this.

John these Silver/White splits look alot like they have Dun in them.
IF you got them from the same person I got mine from, they should finish out huge.

The one in the upper left is one that looks most like yours. Then their in with BUSTOFF. I am breaking him out for one more season of breeding. Took a year off this past season. But, he is too valueable on the bench so he is back in the starting rotation. I MAY get pure snowball SILVERS from using him. Remember he is 1/2 Akers Buff Orp. So who knows what to expect.

Well, maybe this is a stupid question, but I gotta ask...
How is it that all these cross-bred birds are referred to as Orps?

I'm beginning to think I can throw anything in the incubator and when it hatches I can call it an Orp.

Cause he is the man. Without him I would be a no body! lololol
I have joined the Marans Duckwing Yahoo group. And IF I did not have a BUSTOFF I would not have a Silver Duckwing. And would then not be able to make Silver Creles

The splits Whites are 100% Orps. Just a cross of Black over White. When you do that you get a SILVER gene which to anyone who raises Whites is a holy grail in the breeding program. Silver will block out any Buff leakage.
Plus, many of the Buffs you seen at Crossroads have already had Plymouth Rock introduced into their blood. It is the judge to tell them (us) that their not an Orp. Many Lavs are examples of an Orp that need as much attention to be built up too.

I think with the birds above though- they used 2 colors of actual orps to make splits, which just happen to be unaccepted colors, to eventually get whites. We are doing the same thing with buffs in the ameraucanas. They are 100% ameraucana genetically, btu the in-between generation just look like mutts.

I am not familiar iwth the split white project though, so I can only assume they used all orpingtons.
