I do have a few from my projects that are pretty small. Don't tempt me - you may be into bantam orps before you know it!!

You should show off them Golden Duckwings! They look fantastic!

Good things happen to good people. The BV Black Orp pullet at the Crossroads Show, and Champ English at the Central Indiana Poultry Show was raised, conditioned and Shown by Tony Charlton. Tony has Russ Milkey's Black Orp line. I let Russ bring over several hens/pullets 2 years ago and he got to use Carlos Jr with them. And now his line has some outstanding birds. Russ is a good man. GREAT MAN for our hobby. He is all about treating people right, especially the little folks in our great hobby, and Tony & his son is some of the folks who got the chance to Exhibit Russ's line. My very first Orps I ever owned were 5 Russ Milkey hens. The very first day I brought in some new Black Orp blood 4 of the 5 Milkey hens were slaughtered by 2 coons, who I caught up with a few weeks later.
The one survivor is my LahFawnDuh. A 100% original Russ Milkey hen. And one of the fab 5 I got my start with.
Here is LahFawnDuh and one of her daughters. The daughter does have Carlos Jr blood. LahFawnDuh does not.
Haven't shown her. Prolly NEVER will!

For now I have the BUS on gaurd and keeping things under his control

One of Russ's good friends. And a true friend of mine is Julie Walker. She gave me and Terry Disney each a cockerel who is from Russ's line that now has Carlos Jr in them. Terry had first pick, and I got the runt.
His name WAS Bobby Ray.
He is now Officer BarrBRADY. Soon will be given the honor of having at LahFawnDuh and Clairabelle

Sorry about the blurry face in this pic. I learned alot this year. I learned that a smaller runtier Black cock like my OLE TRALFAMADOR when taken to one of these Speckled Sussex/Buff Orp hens with the narrow butt could make Frank the Brown Red cockerel who is now on FEATHERSITE. And is huge.
So BarrBrady's genetics MAY make something special when he gets taken back to his distant aunt LahFawnDuh and daughter. So, that is a breeding plan for early next year.

I also love my blue Orp -- she is giving me eggs, these are the 1st two! (one cold, one warm, apparently she started yesterday)
She was sitting on them like a pro ... I could imagine her thinking to herself "I'm gonna HATCH THESE!"

I gave her a treat and pet her back - now she is doing that funky dance too. I am tickled pink @ the milestones

Quick question: at what age is an orpington hen considered full grown?

Here she is a week or so ago:

another question: why do a few of her feathers have "black smudges" in them? (not dirt lol)

I always wondered how they got the jubilees origionally, same idea? I am tottaly ignorant of the color breeding..I have a tough time keeping a blk color in line.. so I have a lot to learn..for myself I would like to master white or blk at this point, maybe then I can graduate..lot of people in here have lot more experience with color than I do for sure..

I do admit I am getting Duns with the same breeders. She has yet to fully molt and had some green sheen earlier this year. I have her under some pine trees. And the lighting may not be the best. Frank has the Green sheen. Harold, another Brown Red has Green sheen. SO, my Brown Reds do have Green sheen. I just culled 3 more Brown Red males, since Frank and Harold are older and as good as any I could expect. Last summer I posted a Brown Red who I sold to an Indianapolis Fireman. He was nearly as nice as Frank. I will not change my breeding program since I am getting very nice examples of Brown Reds, Duns, Cuckoos. I will go out and pop off a few pics of these varieties and post shortly.
Aveca you are right. Folks here were trying to make Jubilees from Speckled Sussex and Buff Orps. That is how you make new different varieties. No one grilled them like they do me on this thread.

HappyMtn I did just pop off a few more of the oddities I have in various PROJECTS.
This is Harold. He is a Brown Red and brother of Frank. He is much younger then Frank. And I think will be more Orpington type then Frank. Frank has better color. But you must first build the house before painting it. Both Harold and Frank will have a chance to breed. ANY questions of their true genetics will be nswered till next year.

Here is a Blue Cuckoo. Son of my ONLY Lav Cuckoo who I have posted here before. Since my Lav has Cuckoo in his genetics he is throwing it. To even more validate his worth to true Exhibition breeders. A good friend Gayle Pontious and her husband Norm want eggs from this fella. In trade they will be sending me some of their EXHIBITION WHITE ORP eggs here within weeks.
018sos.jpg

Here is the same Blue Cuckoo with one of the Silver Duckwings. This Duckwing is 3/4's Bruno. My purebred Birchen Marans and 1/8 Blue Splash Orp and 1/8 BUSTOFF. No not an Orp. Not a project for Orps this year. BUT, I learned from using BUSTOFF, that outta 20 offspring, there will be one or two who will have Orp type. Those offspring come late next year will be taken to some of my Cuckoos to make a Crele.
Again I will say I am getting PUREBRED WHITE ORP EXHIBITION eggs from Gayle and Norm for eggs from this fella.

My Dun boy I call Dunnald Duckwing Dun
013bu.jpg

Since BUSTOFF's daughters were used in my Cuckoo program this year. The BUSTOFF ROSECOMB gene and the BUSTOFF BANTAM gene has been thrown. I also learned by using him about every 10 eggs or so, the genetic dice get rethrown and these genes get repeated for those 10 eggs. This is an excellent example of how genetics work. Hatched at the same time. Their ROSECOMB BANTAM ORPS

Kathy I do breed PUREBRED Orps. And post pics of quality examples. As seen with my Blacks I just posted today. I just seem to have more interest in my projects. So, I post their pics. And yes I was invited to join the Marans Silver Duckwing Yahoo Group. And I posted it here to let a lady know who has BCMs that if she wanted a new variety to let her son raise they were available.
