, who can help me out? I admit I know nothing about genetics except the blue/black/splash chart and I have never (until now) heard of a lav coming from the crosses.

From my understanding you cannot get a lavender from the blue line – is this true? But lildinkem you have a lavender out of a black/split australorp/buff orp Roo over a splash orp hen – is this what I am understanding?

What is a self blue and how does it differ from the black/blue/splash line (andalusian blue? Is that right)

What makes a self blue a lavender?

My head is swirling.

I do plan on taking some updated pictures of my Bama black chicks (what chunks they are), hopefully soon and posting some of my very own Orp chicks – just two splashes right now.

That is my understanding, too. That you can not get lavender unless the gene is introduced. You can not get a lavender from a B/B/S mating. Isn't this correct?

To get a Lavender, it needs two copies (one from each parent).

Lavender is self blue, and is a totally different gene than the B/B/S, correct? When I asked David what I would get if I crossed Lavender with Blue, he told me it would present as Blue but would carry the Lavender gene. (Note: Blue = B/B/S) Isn't this correct?

I don't know the whys, I am talking to the breeder of the Splash and she says technically I should not be getting what, from the looks of it, that I do have. That BUS is half Australorp. I have heard of Lav split Austrlalorps. And I know the Buff from BUS's mom's side is no LAV carrier. One would think. I have the BUS in an 8' by 8' pen. Totally enclosed, with those 3 girls. And I am happy to have what ever you call it. Bottom line is I have what I have and make more.

My thinking is that you have a shade of blue, possibly a very very light blue that shows no lacing. But, heck, I know nothing!

It just seems impossible to me, from what I understand, that you would get a lavender without a lavender gene from both parents.

Kathy, I thought splash two days ago. Then my friend told me how to identify a self blue. All I can say so far so good. I really don't care what anyone calls them. They are what they are. The chart says it is impossible to be a splash. But, who knows what really is going on in his Australorp side Last I checked MT HEALTHY is a hatchery. One would think they have an extensive breeding program that takes in new blood from all over. And I can make more. I have at least 2 more chicks that are puny and growing up. Good chances their the same thing. Not too worried about what the type is. These are young and still have alot of time to look crappy. For now, I want more! ALOT more. I like them.

Earlier in this thread you said the mother is a blue splash..correct? Since the rooster is such a mix of things why is a splash not possible? The way I understand it the only way you wouldn't have a chance of a splash chick would be when you breed a splash to black....that equals 100% blue. The roo is definately not black.

I'm not sure the chart you plugged your birds into is even relevant since the roo is such a mix. I thought those charts were only for pure colors.

You may be write KATY. I am guessing he throws like a Black. no way to really know till I have some birds grown up somewhat.
Here are some other Blues in amongst my SS chicks from BUS. There is actually about a dozen in this brooder tub, they all tucked in and I was able to get these two. One for sure is a blue, now these two chicks are from the same hatch as the yellow one I posted earlier. About the same size.
They look like Blues to me.
