Yes, they live in wet Washington state, and that muddy run you see is actually 30 ft by 60 ft! They have lots of room, but have eaten nearly every blade of grass anyway. I pull grass for them regularly. I gave them nearly all the spent garden plants after the growing season.
When my husband mows --he aims the flying grass into their pen. I buy 1 or 2 heads of cabbage every time I grocery shop--they love that. I still feel sorry for them pecking around in the mud, so some days when it's not raining I open the gate and let them out to "graze"!
BTW --Miss Paula is looking better --she ultimately lost every tail feather, she looked like half a chicken! But now it's 3 weeks after the pic was taken and she has new short feathers all over and has a happy look in her eyes.

ahahahaha....poor girls, they even look embarrassed!
for a while i thought my EE was getting his butt kicked by my banny cochin rooster...apparently i was wrong - just molting.

Just about all my birds are molting right now.. for a little while i thought other birds where picking on them but i was wrong. one of my hens is growing back beautiful black and brown feathers and i think she was molting the worst for a little while but now is back to normal and more beautiful than ever. but sadly i have no pictures of them in there molting stage yet

While mine are molting they are grumpy and have a tendency to peck at the other chickens. It's probably a good thing-- because they look vulnerable and might otherwise get picked on themselves!

How long does it last? I have one BR just starting her molt....Also how long without eggs?? Do I need to turn on the heat lamp? It is only getting down to mid 40's at night. Thanks in advance for any advise.

It's difficult to say just exactly how long the molt lasts. It varies from hen to hen. My girls are 18 to 22 months old and their molt lasted about 2 months. They stopped laying alltogether while they were molting. As I said some of them became grumpy and would peck at the others if they came near the food.
As for heat I don't turn on a heater unless it gets lower than 30. Here in WA we had a cold week in the teens so I turned a heater on during the night. In the winter it's usually in the 40s and they have done just fine with no heat. Hope this helps.

My silkie chicken, Harriet, got so moody when moulting that she took to guarding the pophole and wouldn't let the others in at bed-time. We actually had to put another pophole in the henhouse to make sure the others got in at night before the automatic door shut!
