post your chicken coop pictures here!

Usually searching for them on BYC (Back Yard Chickens) will work. The shorthand is annoying at first, but you get a feel for it pretty quickly.

I might add, just ask if you're not sure. We've all been there and will be again.

Yes, winter's coming alright...I, too, can feel it in the air. While we don't get as brutally cold as you do (normally get 2-3 weeks of -20 at night), it is hard to do no matter how cold it gets. I'm hoping the 250 watt bucket heaters I just ordered will be sufficient for my horizontal water nipple buckets...we'll see! I hate the thought of having to lug water out every day through the snow...yikes! I don't plan on heating the coop. Beginning this week I'm going to start "layering" their floor bedding. I use pine shavings. Normally I just sweep/clean the whole coop out every 1-2 weeks, but now with winter coming on I'll pick up poops/messes individually and let the bedding start compacting for winter. I'll probably end up with about 6-8 inches when all is said and done. My ventilation is good so I'm not worried about that. It's funny, you love your flock and it's hard not to remember that they don't like to be 'warm' like humans do...eek! Wishing you all the best!!

Ok you guys......coming from an older person who has no tolerance for the cold ..

..goodness gracious! Oh yea, I know its not a biggy for most of you but I had put together a door last week and was completely bothered by the fact that I knew it was not sturdy! With no building experience, all I was going by was my own thought process....no good!

LOL Well, I got to really looking at all of the coop picts on here and went out this morning,,,took the door completely apart.. went to Lowe's and got some L brackets....went back home and turned the 2x4's differently and put it all back together! Its a 5x3' door...LOL...when I get my run finished, I will be able to frame it and hang it. Already have the hardware and hardwire......just got to do one thing at a time!!!! Here's what I got done...NOW....its sturdy!!

Will run a 2x4 vertically on the right side between the 2 horizontal braces to attach the handle to and of course the wire...going to put it on the inside and on the outside of the door.. yea, its probably overkill but...I'm OCD about this! I've probably built this coop 2x so far because I do things the wrong way first! LOL

@jtbass2756 If you want to make sure it doesn't sag, you could still add a diagonal brace, low end on the hinged side of the door.
Could I use a 1x6".....most everything I use is salvaged materials....I used a new 2x4x8 here with bracing scraps from the bucket at the rear of the Lowe's store in the lumber area... I have several old 1x6's I think.. I didn't use any nails here...all screws.

Our chickens free-range from dawn to dusk and mid-day snooze under the old wheelbarrow under the shade of the popup canopy in the yard. On hot days the Orbit Mister is going slowly to keep the area cool. However by mid to late afternoon they meander back into the coop for an hour or two. I don't know if it's because the coop got shadier or breezier in the afternoon or if it's because it's closer to the back door where we come out to bring their treats, but they have their little pattern of habits that I dont even begin to try to understand. As long as they're safe with a lot of shelters, doghouses, canopies, and bushes to hide/sleep under in the open yard we don't worry. You have a large tree right outside of your chicken ramp and maybe your flock is hiding from an aerial predator in that large tree. During the heat of day predators are usually not flying around but in the early mornings or late afternoons. Maybe that's why your chickens hang out in the safety of the coop morning and evening when the predators are flying around? Humans can't always spot predators that can camouflage well but chickens have excellent vision to spot them.

I was just showing the places where my chickens like to stay. There are a couple other pictures I took but they somehow got lost when I tried transferring them. when I took those photos the chickens, ducks, quails, etc. were under a giant maple tree low to the ground with just enough space only for them to crawl under. The branches under the tree are also many and sometimes when the chickens don't go in right away, I know one of them probably flew up to high in the branches and got stuck. We let our chickens out in the morning, making sure no early bird eaters are waiting, then let them out and they automatically go back in to roost, us closing the coop door. we also have a little bin for the chicks; and as they get older we move them to the chicken trailer where they grow to be pullets, then at night, we put them in the coop. Its funny, they never seem to leave the area we put them in. Must be because they are a little weary of their surroundings. But in all, my chickens have the same patterns as yours and if you find something about this habit, by all means!! Lets me know! :)
