post your chicken coop pictures here!

Dual purpose breeds need roosts. Black Australorp hatchery birds will not get nearly as big as show quality lines do. Expect about a 5 lb hen and a 6 lb rooster before processing. They will take at least 6 months for them to grow big enough to harvest. My girls are 12 weeks and weigh maybe 3 lbs. A typical meat bird setup will not work for dual purpose. Broiler breeds grow so fast, they are ready for processing by 8 to 10 weeks old. They aren't around long enough for roosts to matter.

Not flawed never too much ventilation....  Draft is different than ventilation... If you find you have drafts its easily remedied with a door to close against bllowing rain or snow...

Very cute coop by the way.  I prefer to be able to walk in and stand up...

Thank you! My husband is going to build some flaps that go over the vents so we can shut them down if needed depending on where the wind and weather is coming out of!

Thank you!
Very nice chicken house mundamnsel!   Our design is similar to your with the roof and it's on skids as well.  What pitch did you do your roof.
Ours is supposed to be 4:12.  Did you use all PT wood or did you use untreated for the walls and/or roof?

Thank you! The front wall is about 8 1/2 ft high and back wall is maybe 7?? We used all untreated wood and nothing is insulated. Whatever isn't sided will be painted this weekend :) can't wait to mic the girls in!

So here's our coop for our five, five-ish week old chicks. (We have two light brahmas, a black jersey giant, and two Easter eggers.) We are first-time chicken parents and very excited for them to get out of our house and into their own place!
This site has been great inspiration for us!

Well that stinks lol...

I might try to talk my husband into using these for eggs and to replace our poor girls that got killed. Then look at some others for meat. 6 moths is extreme for a few pounds of meat. What do you use? I know I've got 1 rooster out of the 4 we will be keeping. If he's half as productive as his dad I'll put evil Spike in a nice soup!!! :lau

I've got 2 pullets that think I'm mommy. They are hand raised vs hen raised.

I watched Freckles hatch from pip to zip and Toodles from moments after zipping. Missed the start but caught the end lol..

They will sit in my lap and drift to sleep if I let them.

Quote: If you were just wanting meat birds I personally would just get cornish cross. They are purely birds for meat and area ready to harvest at 6-8 weeks. If you were wanting a more sustainable source of meat that is able to mate and provide babies for eating then I have no idea to be honest.

Thanks... I've got black Austrolops right now. But if they take 6 MONTHS to kill we will do 2 kinds. Them for eggs. Something else for meat.
