post your chicken coop pictures here!

My hubby got SO much work done on the coop today- I'm so excited! It's set up for 6 Wyannotes.

This is the coop that my family built this Spring. It isn't quite done yet--needs to be trimmed and it needs the shingles put on the roof. I need the rain to go away for a couple of days (and then the time at the right time) to get the shingles done.

I also need to get the roosts and laying boxes in yet, but I need to put some more thought and research into them before I get started. For the moment, I've moved on to planting fruits and veggies for the future--I'll have to get back to the chicken coop before the ladies start paying rent in August or September. We do have one temporary 8' roost.

We dug a foot down into the ground and built the coop in the hole. We wanted a dirt floor for a deep compost, and we wanted to make sure that it wasn't easy for predators and pests to get in. If they are going to get in through the bottom, they'll have to dig a foot-deep hole to get to the bottom of the building first. The bottom foot of the wall all the way around is a pressure treated 2 X 12. I had my concerns about chemical leaching but I needed something that could stand up to the abuse of chickens, microbiology in compost, digging from the outside, and moisture from inside and outside. Pressure treated was the only way to go for the bottom of the walls.
