Here's a picture of one of the boys helping build our coop. It's 12ft x 4ft. The run is 78ft x 8ft plus the garden area in the winter. Eventually the grapes will cover most of the run for shade and snacks.

TJordan,
One thing that you may be able to do is to make a simple set of chimes out of old cd's and put them on sticks so they stick up above the run. Most birds wont go near moving flashy things.
This should help if it is a hawk.
I am trying to figure out how to put them so the chickens aren't freaked out even more by the chimes themselves.
The chain on the gate is a good way to tell if someone is going in while you are out. I have 2 latches on each of my runs and houses and would latch only one when figuring out my thief issue. I would come home and they would both be latched.
Dead give away for my DH since he thought I was nuts was the tracks in the snow going from the side gate straight to the coops and out again.
THEN he believed me.
sorry that had to happen to your daughter, who was only trying to be friendly...so sad, but I have to say I've seen a beyond-drastic change in how children are nowadays. Being 70 years old I've seen it all...been there, done that...again, so sorry, and tell your daughter she's a trooper for sure!Good thinking!!
It's baffling what people will do.
My 9 year old daughter was seen giving her school snack to another girl on the bus a couple of weeks ago. The driver told me about it the next morning, saying I might want to send her with something else because he didn't want to see me wasting money on something she doesn't like and ends up giving away. When she got home that afternoon, I asked her about it and told her if she didn't like it to let me know. She told me, "It's not that. I gave it to _____ because she never has a snack." So, for the rest of the week, I sent her with an extra snack and juice box to share with the other girl (I want my children to understand that no matter how much we may struggle at times, there will always be someone in greater need).
Well, silly me forgot to pack the extra this past Monday. When my daughter got home from school and asked for a juice box (which they know I buy only for school and have large bottles of juice for home), I asked her what happened to the one I sent her with that morning. She told me the other girl got mad that she hadn't brought the extra snack so she took her backpack, raided it and stole her snack! I was shocked, speechless, furious, etc.
