post your chicken coop pictures here!

That bird is unquestionably a cockerel. The comb is huge and red, he has the "telltale" rusty red coming in on the wings. I would start looking for a home for him. Sorry.

I have a production red that looks like a rooster with a very prominant comb and crowed after i killed the roosters we had but she lays nice eggs :)

The gable openings will be covered with 1/2 inch hardware cloth so I don't think snow accumulation will be an issue. The soffit is solid however I could cut openings in it.

My little coop has a hardware cloth floor so air moves in from there and out the vents in the top. I've seen it get -30 F here and have had no issues with frost bite that's why I am considering adding more ventilation down low.

I will be adding a 8 x 12 ft run which will pretty much double my run area. I plan on covering half of it to provide them a snow protected area. As you can see from the pic they currently have about 25 sq ft of protected area under the small coop.

The people door in the other coop sits about 2 ft off the ground. If we get that much snow I'll be having issues just getting into the run area let alone the coop.

It sounds like you have a plan going. The reason I mentioned snow getting in through those gable vents is from some images posted showing the inside of a coop completely encrusted with snow and ice...BRRRRR!!!!!!!! Having little to none down here, snow is a foreign thing to me...and I really want to keep it that way. ;) Your covered run sounds great.

Ok, I couldn't tell from the picture where the door stopped...it looked like it went to ground level. 2' of snow would shut us down...I mean, NOTHING on the highways or byways except maybe somebody named Bubba saying "Here, hold my beer and watch this!". <grin>

I really like PT Woods open air mentality. Birds gotta have air!!!!

While we do get snow here where I live, certainly not as much as other parts of Colorado, I have been known to go and shovel out the run. I lived in Fl for 25 years, an inch of snow and people didn't know what to do or how to drive.

I too like the Woods design. I got this old coop from a neighbor who happened to get it from someone else. I'm just trying to adapt it to something that will work for me. My neighbor had it sitting in his backyard for a year without making use of it. I convinced him to give it to me. I wish I could of convinced him sooner, I might have saved a few bucks.

If the gables face the prevailing wind you can stop snow and rain infiltration by simply spacing a wind break board about 4-6" in front of the vents, this will still allow air flow up and down but will help prevent drafts and snow/rain infiltration straight in...

Here's my new coop. Still have a little final trim to add, touch up paint here and there, but we're up and running.

Documented the build in this BYC thread.

Before.

After.

We have five chicks, 2 barred rock + 3 RIR, that were born 5/4/2016. 16.5 square feet of coop space + 55 square feet of run.

You changed your avatar.... I was about to say.... Hmmmm I thought someone else built that....
