Has anyone else noticed the old chicken coops on some old farms...around here the buildings were around 15 by 30 ft...more or less...but one thing that they all have or had...is windows in the south facing wall...lots of windows! And sometimes shutters and removable window awnings, for in the summer...I will see if the one that I am thinking of is still there...I think they turned it into a work shop and storage building. I've collected a few old books on chicken keeping, and they have pictures of these buildings...let me know if you have seen them in your area.

I live around dozens of farms. I will keep an eye out.

open air poultry coops were the normal .. good ventilation is the most important thing to chickens.. not sure where people got the idea that most chickens need heat in the winter... the hot weather is harder on them than cold... my GGP was on my parents property until a century took it's toll on an apple tree that shaded it.

I hope to see some newbies post pics of their coops in the BYC contest thread "Flock Master64's coop/hutch photo contest" which goes through to Dec 22 I believe. I love seeing newbies getting into chickens or building/buying their first coops. I love seeing how different climate regions solve their chicken housing issues.

This is our first year with chickens and we're hooked! We only have 3 RIRs for now.
We started with a small starter coop but then decided to build a bigger one using an old truck cap from a work truck. The nesting boxes are in the old tool boxes on the side so we just open the doors from the outside to collect the eggs. Some of the photos are from before it was completed.
