I built this almost a decade ago after much brush removal and demolishing an old wood shed.
I considered buying a shed. I thought many were built poorly and were expensive.
The coops people sell at feed stores are tiny and I knew the more space your birds have, the happier they are.

Interior. I like to place slanted boards over the top of nests to
keep my birds from making a mess of the tops of them. I have
since put curtains over the nests to keep layers happy and others
from annoying them.

Exterior. The windows look puny but are sufficient for ventilation.
It was what I could afford at the time. When it's hot I can always leave the large door open as well.
The yard wire is buried 16+" to keep digging varmints at bay. To this day one has never been in my yard.

I wired over the top too because I don't like wild birds getting in their feed.
They still manage to sneak in every so often. The coop isn't that attractive
compared to some of the coops folks show here, but I know it will probably outlive me.
I'll be painting it soon and it will look nicer than the stain.

Here was another while it was in progress. The chicken door wasn't cut out yet
or the electric netting around the yard.

Here's the inside before I added more roosts.

When I'm home, there's plenty of range for them in addition to a good size yard.

My new coop!
I asked a local carpenter who makes playhouses, summerhouses etc, to build me a coop in the style of a little house, including chimney!
I painted it myself, inside and out - it took aaaaagessss!!!
My girls weren't sure about their new coop at first, especially my top hen, but now they love it!

Now that was one fancy coop.

Thank you, though it has the 'lived in' look now and they only moved in two weeks ago!

I love your coop, and land! I could never build a coop, it would be the worst coop in the world!

My new coop is in a different world with different issues. I have winds, rust, rodents and dogs all trying to minimize my egg production.

A duplex coop with built in wind breaks. Capable of housing 60 adult chooks

The thatched NIPA roof - delivered by side-car

floor is split bamboo

Rodents cannot scale GI sheeting and dogs get turned away by cinder blocks. The GI sheet also acts as a wind break for the birds.
