Wootwoot! Got our first egg today... we have 5 black stars (17 weeks on sunday), 4 golden comets and a silkie (16 weeks around today)... I don't know whose it is yet, although I'm positive it isn't the silkie. Hubby texted me the photo, so I have no idea how large it is. I can't wait to get home and see it in person!

I think these are from my Rhode Island Reds (prod. reds, actually). I have two that are just over 21 weeks old. The other chickens I have are a Buff Orp who is 19 weeks and two Australorps at 19 weeks.

My question is do you think it's the Reds for sure who are laying? I have gotten an egg a day since the 30th of July. Do you think the two that are the same size with the identical wrinkled ends are from the same chicken? (Those are the first two eggs.) That would mean she was laying her first two eggs less than 24 hours apart. Would the third egg definitely have been from the other 21 week old because it was a different size?

You'll know if it's two when you get 2 eggs in one day. That's how I found out all 4 of my Orpingtons were laying, got 4 eggs in one day! And pullets can lay eggs that are different sizes. Congrats on your first eggs!

Thank you. I felt the pelvic bones of the oldest chickens and the 21 week old Production Red and the 19 week Australorps were the widest but since the color is so similar I think they are all Production Red Eggs. Do you think they could all be from the same chicken then?

ok, so maybe our oldest Production Red is the only one laying now. Her pelvic bones are considerably wider than everyone else's. (Thank you for your reply!)

oh, wait! the eggs were in different egg boxes. Does that matter? I have three egg boxes and it was the middle box for the first egg, then the far left box the next day and then the middle box again the day after that. Doesn't the same chicken always lay in the same spot?

Nope, my chickens will lay one day in the middle box and then the next day in the box on the left and sometimes the box on the right, near the door, but not normally. I don't think they like that one so much. She's probably just testing them out to see which one she likes best.

Which chicken is laying: I'd also check to see which comb/eye is redder. My first girl to lay got really red around the eyes. Now that she's been laying for a month, she's back to being really pale. I have one RIR, and one Red link that are getting redder than the rest of their "sisters". I have 2 RIR and one is becoming redder in the comb area than the other RIR (like you, I think they are really Production Reds, not true RIR) so she' s going to lay before the other RIR. I have 4 Sex links that are a couple of weeks younger than the RIR. One of them is also getting a red comb. Now as to which one of these two will be the first, I don't know.

Nest Boxes: my one that's been laying has only used one nest box. I have fake eggs in the other three. We will see if they use the same box as my layer or choose a different box.
