Wow Venus, NZ. A couple of us at work joke around about moving to NZ, two to the north island & one to the South Island. One of my main questions was " wonder how chickens would do there?" Based on many posts, quite successfully. I put the eggs back in the coop to guide them to the proper laying nest, they cracked the egg and it was a double yoke also. Great to hear from you

NZ is a wonderful place. I originally came from England but have been here nearly 20 years now. I've never regretted it. As for "how chickens would do here" - well, brilliantly!!!

I might be biased, but my four are great. We even got 3 eggs yesterday. They've only been laying since the 18th March!! I think one of them still isn't laying yet as they're only 18 weeks old and she doesn't have a red comb yet, so I'm just chuffed at getting three eggs in one day. Gorgeous girls!!

So I FINALLY got some eggs from my buff silkie she is 12 months old

Late bloomer but she is finally living up to her name Buffy the egg layer

She laid three took a day off and laid the last three ending today :)
I think the first one may be yolkless

This was the very first egg laid by one of my girls. It was so cold that night I brought all of them inside to my plant room and in the morning found this little surprise in one of my planters! Owning chickens can sometimes feel like an Easter Egg hunt all the time!

Our first egg from stryder. She is a very young hen we rescued from filthy conditions. The feathers missing on her back are from being 'accidentally' burned by the previous owner.

But now she is a happy chicken! She has laid an egg every day since this one. :) She is by far our best layer. I'm not sure what breed she is. A red sex link, a red star, or maybe a RIR cross.
