Got our very first egg!! Not sure which hen it was but she was about 23 weeks the day she laid it... this is so exciting!! its a little smaller than an average egg but i expected that, but its perfect otherwise :)

Our first egg, a tiny thing.
Sometimes I think she bought it from a passing pigeon just to make us stop bugging her.
Came from a Houdan at 22 weeks.

Thanks for the reply, today she laid another one in the exact same spot. I noticed her behavior before she laid the egg she was going all over the place looking for the perfect spot. I guess she was pretty happy with her first choice. I liked the comment about the egg hunt every day, I live in the woods and have a feeling that is what's going to happen here! Thanks again!

My first chicken egg arrived Tuesday evening. It is the small speckled egg. The one on the bottom is a store bought large egg, the one on the left is from my buff orpington duck. My girls are EE born on July 11th, they are 19 weeks old.

Here is the egg alone.

I got another egg today not sure if it's from the same pullet or a different one. Many are doing the egg squat, they are quiet so I don't hear them sing.
Do the eggs get bigger as they get older?

Oh it sure is fun! I guess it stays fun since I still have a few girls I can count on to lay in the coop & nesting barrels :)
I will have to go out & pay attention to the egg nomads when it comes time to secretly deposit!!!!

19wks... I wish! I don't even know how old my 2 EE girls are now, I got them as well started pullets (well past 19wks - well past)
She laid such a beautiful little egg is it like a pinkish egg along with the adorable speckle, it reminds me of a tiny dinosaur egg!!!!

It is a pinkish brown, with darker speckles. I think my second egg was also from the same one since it is nearly identical to the first. I am waiting for my first green or blue egg. it is such a cute egg.

Oh man the egg song.... Big red my original RIR loves to sing that on & off all day long lol I always go running around looking for eggs.
I swear she does it for the entertainment

I'm sure I look hilarious trotting around & hopping thru the bushes!!!!

"Made you look ... AGAIN! (Those humans are SO gullible, he, he)"

Sounds like the neighbor's roosters. They start before sunup, "Hey, the sun will be coming up soon" and they continue all day "Hey, the sun is still up!" "Just though you might want to know that the sun is still up!"

Zia (Ancona) started the egg song a week before she started laying but once she did, she's been the most productive An egg Sunday, another yesterday and another today.
Yue comes next, probably one every 4 days including Sunday and today.
Got another very light small roundish one today but it wasn't brown. Wondering if it is from Peep (Cubalaya) she's a squatter. Under the roost and pooped on.
I wish Zia and Yue would train the rest of them to head for the box!
I'm not sure we've gotten anything from the Favs after the first 2 or 3.

As I said above, Zia started singing a week before she laid. She was also looking in various nooks and crannies in the barn that day, not her usual wandering, so I put her in the nest box. She fussed about for a while, then left. She went back in several times that day and all week, then laid 6 days later.
She has ALWAYS laid in the box except last Sunday. Thinking maybe the egg snuck up on her when she was out with the rest of the girls and didn't make it all the way to the box. She laid it just inside the coop door and came out singing her head off.

So MAYBE if when your girl is looking around, you stick her in the box, she'll think "Saaayyyy, THIS would be a good place to lay next time".
