I have a potbelly that was born September 14th. She was in a large pen with cows, her mother, another female, and her brother. There was a man who dropped off a male potbelly in December while the owners were asleep and they found they had a new pig the next morning. it took them a few weeks to find a new home for him. My pig is now clearly pregnant. We can see movement and her tits are starting to swell. We’re not sure exactly how far along she is though and we cannot take her to the vet because of this quarantine. I’d like to know if anyone could tell how long they think we have? And how do we keep her from dying while giving birth because she is barely 6 months old now. Also what color combinations would we get? She’s fully black and the male was white.

Some sows won’t drop milk until after they give birth, so it’s very possible she’s in labor but just isn’t ‘leaking’ yet. Can you tell if her vulva is enlarged? If it looks swollen and red or pinkish usually that’s a sign of labor as well. Here’s another website i found... my search history is going to be interesting 😂

We’ve had two girls and a boy.. one girl didn’t make it. They are doing very well. I left her long for just a little while to go do some chores around the house and when I came back she had all three already! I reached in to see if there’s more and I can’t feel any. Momma is very tired. The last one she pushed was still born and I think there’s at least one more left that might be a still born. She seems to be trying to push another.

Yay!!! I’m so proud of you and her. So you have two surviving babies? There might be another stillborn, or if she’s done she may be trying to push the placenta. Keep me updated!!

it ended up just being the two! She delivered the placenta not long after.. she needed a little help with it because she was exhausted! The black one has white feet and a white tail tip and is a boy. the little while one has black marks on its nose and is a girl. I’m very happy and over joyed!

Potbelly females reach sexual maturity at 3-4 months of age, so while she is young, she’s mature enough to hopefully have the baby without problems. The gestation period is 113-115 days. Do you know around the time when she would have gotten pregnant?

As for the birth itself, you will need to move her to an area by herself about five days before she’s due, if you can figure that out. The birthing area should be either earth or a non-slip so the babies will be able to walk easier. The area will need a heat lamp as babies can’t regulate their own body temperature. It will need to be large enough that the mom can lie down away from the babies without crushing them. You also need some sort of bedding, such as wood chips or hay, not human items like towels or such.

Either several days or hours before the birth, the mom will start to secrete colostrum from her nipples. This is a clear sign that birthing will begin soon. It will look like a yellow liquid.

If everything goes well, you could expect anywhere from 1-12 babies, but usually in the 6-8 range. Without complications, it should take 1-2 hours, with 15-30 mins in between each piglet.

They will likely be white, black, or a combination of black and white.

She’s really started building her nest.. clear liquid keeps coming out of her vagina and she started pushing earlier like she thought she had to poo and nothing came out... she won’t let her tail down and all she is doing is building her nest and drinking lots of water... is she going into labor? This is my first pig and this is her first litter! Nervous but excited. I’ve don’t quite a bit of research but none of it is very specific to the behavior she’s showing right now.. there is NO milk coming out of her teats but they look very full??

Oh man! I’m guessing she’s going into labor, or at least very soon! The tests might not “leak” but if she’ll let you, you can gently massage them from the base to the tip and see if anything will come out. If it shoots out, she’s really close. If only a drop or two comes out, she’s not ready yet.

Here’s a passage I took from online.

“The preparation for farrowing starts some 10 to 14 days prior to the actual date, with the development of the mammary glands and the swelling of the vulva. At the same time teat enlargement occurs and the veins supplying the udder stand out prominently. The impending signs of farrowing include a reduced appetite and restlessness, the sow standing up and lying down and if bedding is available chewing and moving this around in her mouth. If she is loose-housed on straw she will make a bed. Within 12 hours of actual delivery of piglets, milk is secreted into the mammary glands and with a gentle hand and finger massage it can be expressed from the teats. This is one of the most reliable signs of impending parturition. A slight mucous discharge may be seen on the lips of the vulva. If a small round pellet of faeces is seen in the mucous and the sow is distressed, farrowing has started and it is highly likely the first piglet is presented backwards. This small pellet is the meconium or first faeces coming from the rectum of the piglet inside. An internal examination is immediately required. The final part of stage 1 is the opening of the cervix to allow the pigs to be pushed out of the uterus, through the vagina and into the world.”

she got pregnant in December but we’re not sure exactly what week because the owners didn’t even know she had the chance of getting pregnant. Thank you so much!!

Welcome!
It's time to have a call in to your veterinarian, or to find one if you haven't already, so you can have backup if things don't go well. These little ones might need assistance, so find out who's available, and talk to them tomorrow.
All the best,
Mary

A vet won’t come out because of the Coronavirus.. really bad timing!!

So 114 days from December 1 is March 24, and 114 days from December 31 is April 23. Basically, you’ll be having babies any time now within the next month!
