Poultry and Dogs - Who Has Happy Pictures and Stories?

Abby the dane, not within a month of her arriving at the house, with the 3 girls

Tavarish the dobe, with the ducklets. They nipped him a few times and he gained a very healthy respect for them and ignores them almost too much to the point of almost running them over while he's running around the yard

Jet the greyhound, with the ducklets. She also was nipped a few times. She does follow them to see if maybe they have an egg under them, but leaves them alone.

We just got our bitties today and I decided to let 2 of my dogs check them out (one of my dogs has a pretty high prey drive and the other is a little puppy so I didnt let them near it). My Cane Corso was very interested in them but he can be a little rough when hes sniffin and my pit bull is young and has a tendency to paw at things so it wasnt a stress free meeting lol.

Heres Nicodemus (the corso) with one of my little buff brahmas. This was right before he tried to gently pick the little thing up and tote it off lol.

Here he is poutin that I wouldnt let him carry her away.

Here my pit barely restraining herself from pawin at the lil chicky.

I have 4 dogs and they all do well with the chickens but one in paticular is awesome. He is an Australian/german shepherd mix. He is so gentle with the hens and with the wk. old chicks. He thinks they are his 'girls'. He does not like when the rooster comes around them, and amazingly the rooster doesn't bother him, I guess the rooster knows whos boss. Pepper, our dog, will sit with the chicks, keep the hens together and just be their protector. Love him so much.

Be careful letting her eat corn cobs. They can cause an impaction in the bowel that requires surgery to remove. I know of two dogs personally that have had this happen. They had much larger digestive tracts than Savannah does.
Just looking out for you

Thanks for the advice

, that ended up being the ONLY time she ate the corn cobs, they came right back up after these pictures. She also stays away from the chickens now since my roo chases her so much.

My dog, as seen above in my earlier post, wanted nothing more than to get a chicken at first. I was frustrated and tried the "Dog Whisperer" methods to no avail. I got tired of it and one day brought out a bag of bread and the dog, while the flock was free-ranging. I fed my dog a few small pieces to get her attention. Then, I called the birds over too. Here's what happened. Everybody was interested in bread, so I made my dog lay down for some bread as a reward. Then I made her wait, while I gave a piece to the chickens to eat. This went on alternately until the bread was gone. After a few days of this, my dog learned to eat "with" the chickens, rather than chase them all over. It's been a year, and she still likes to sneak up on them and harass them, but she won't hurt them. I even gave her a full release command to get a rooster that escaped from me, but she just wouldn't hurt him.

If you feel confident enough to try this, pick a snack that your dog would be willing to die for; something too yummy to pass up. I'm not saying it works for everyone, but it was a turning point for me. Good luck.

Sounds like what I would have done to get the dog used to the chickies!

We have a Boxer and a Bluetick Coonhound/Australian Shepherd mix. The mix we were lucky enough to raise at the same time as our first batch of hens, so he's excellent with them.

He's more interested in vacuuming up any spilled chick food than the chicks themselves. :p

Our Boxer was rescued as an adult and took a little bit more work to convince that chickens are part of the pack, not a snack. She adores the new babies, though. Can't take her eyes off of them.

One of our older ladies, Little Rock, competing with the pups for scraps.

When I was a kid, my Dad always kept Game chickens. He liked how self-sufficient they are. They were mostly free range and when we found a nest we would mark a few eggs to leave in because if we took all of them the hen would abandon that nest and hide a new one. We always had hens with chicks and none of our dogs ever bothered the chickens at all. Those Game hens will attack anything that even thinks about a chick!! Our cats would not go anywhere near the baby chicks either. I remember the cats getting "treed" by a hen! I myself was flogged a few times for getting too close! We joked sometimes that we should start a business to cure people's dogs that wanted to hurt chickens!
