Poultry and Dogs - Who Has Happy Pictures and Stories?

Savannah my Boxer/APT mix just hanging out eating corn cobs and apples with her girls

These pictures are before my rooster started chasing this 80lb dog around the yard.

Be careful letting her eat corn cobs. They can cause an impaction in the bowel that requires surgery to remove. I know of two dogs personally that have had this happen. They had much larger digestive tracts than Savannah does.
Just looking out for you

This is UNO...the baby EMU with his best buddy RINGO. I have a great passion for hatching so I thought I would try an EMU. It was a bit more challenging but well worth it so far. UNO follows the cats and dogs around in the house. RINGO puts up with UNO much better then the other cats and dogs we have.

Thanks for letting me share!!

EMU'S !! I helped work a flock of emus one summer back in college. I thought they had gone out of fashion. I LOVED them and it was awesome to watch two dozen of those little zebra striped youngsters sprint around their run . . .

hi everyone i Love the photos, and i wish i could add one of my dog, he is a lab mix and does like to chase the chickens from the fence line which Makes me Very scared that he would kill a chicken giving a chance of if they Run. has anyone had a dog like this but did ok with being around chickens, i have yet to let One chicken out in the yard, because of this. i might test it by putting him on a leash and seeing how he does. still scared.

My dog, as seen above in my earlier post, wanted nothing more than to get a chicken at first. I was frustrated and tried the "Dog Whisperer" methods to no avail. I got tired of it and one day brought out a bag of bread and the dog, while the flock was free-ranging. I fed my dog a few small pieces to get her attention. Then, I called the birds over too. Here's what happened. Everybody was interested in bread, so I made my dog lay down for some bread as a reward. Then I made her wait, while I gave a piece to the chickens to eat. This went on alternately until the bread was gone. After a few days of this, my dog learned to eat "with" the chickens, rather than chase them all over. It's been a year, and she still likes to sneak up on them and harass them, but she won't hurt them. I even gave her a full release command to get a rooster that escaped from me, but she just wouldn't hurt him.

If you feel confident enough to try this, pick a snack that your dog would be willing to die for; something too yummy to pass up. I'm not saying it works for everyone, but it was a turning point for me. Good luck.
