Poultry and Dogs - Who Has Happy Pictures and Stories?

OH I LOVE YOUR SHELTIE!! We used to raise them when I was a kid. Then I grew up and it seems like our dogs find us. We always end up with strays but most make good dogs, just not nearly as cute as the little collies

That polish is some kinda funky color -- I like it!! I just hatched some swedish flower hens that are pretty dang colorful, but nothing beats that polish!

Anyway, here's my "poultry and dogs" pic. This is Henri, my sebastopol gosling from last year and my dog, Moose.

I have a rescue dog who is not really trained for anything, she is very loving and knows that I love my birds. I got several chicks at different ages, and introduced her to them, she was very excited and I was afraid she would hurt one. Most of my birds are free range and some of the "teens" had escaped from their pen. we ran around and caught what we thought were all of them and decided to go in for the nite. Lila was beside herself didn't want to come in, kept jumping at the door, giving a non bark and scratching at the door. I had never seen her act this way. I let her out but she kept coming to me and then running off. I followed her and one of the chicks (I didn't know had escaped ) was hiding under a piece of wood!!! The weather was freezing the chick would have died!!!! I know I can trust her the birds can and do trust her. If they are free ranging she stays out to protect from hawks!!! I am Blessed!!!!!

Great to hear all these dog/poultry stories. I have a one year old boxer and a nine month old corgie mix we have 20 chicks on the way buff orps,

australorp , golden comets and naked necks five of each. Hoping that we can have a harmonious home like I see on these posts !

Sadly, no pictures. But our old airedale, when the chicks were little would let them sit on her and cuddle up and she would just sit there, keeping an eye on them for me when I did my chores. And when one of them strayed to far away, she would herd it back into the group. It was so cute!!

AAAANNND then the chicks grew up and Arwen recognized them as the squawking-feathery-things-she-can-chase-around, so that was the end of that.

I love this thread! It's so wonderful to see so many people debunking the myth that dogs and chicken can't get along. So many times our animal friends are not given enough credit!

I have a Border Collie/ Australian Cattle Dog cross that is the best dog ever. She helps my daughtger catch chickens and can even herd chickens on the command 'Freckles Get the Chickens'. In fact even if the dog is not there just saying 'Freckles Get the Chickens' and all the chickens immeadiatly head back to the coop. If two roosters fight she will jump in and break them up, she stands between them until they both turn and walk away. I can't say she likes chickens I suspect she looks down on them but she seems to understand that they are important to us therefore it is her job to protect them. She only chases chickens when told to otherwise she ignores them. She doesn't eat chicken poop but she occasionaly will eat the lay crumbles. However she is a stone cold rodent killer and has been known to jump on hay bales to catch rats in the rafters. She has also taken on a raccoon that came to feed on the cat food, she fought it and eventually treed the sucker. She cornered an opossum but waited until I said 'Get 'em' to go after it and let it go when I told her to. I have never had a dog that I could tell to 'Get 'em' and they WOULD get it!

She loves my son, considers him 'her boy', she does obdience, agility and showmanship with him since he was 5 yrs old.

Wow! What really amazes me is the behavior of the chickens in response to your saying, 'Freckles Get the Chickens'! And what a dog to catch and release a wild predator on command. Super smart and disciplined! You should be proud of her!

That's a great story! I've had a number of rescued dogs, pound dogs, dumped dogs in my lifetime (so far, and more to go, I hope) and they seem to know they were saved and have a second chance, so pay you back with every kindness they can. This one sounds like a real winner!

Thank you for the compliment on my Sheltie. I agree with you about dogs finding you throughout life more than you finding them - funny how that goes. How do you like your Sebastopols? I think they are the most elegant and adorable geese ever! I've even toyed with the idea of getting a couple but would have to learn more about them first.

By the way, the Polish in the picture is a Tolbunt, which is some kind of rare, although I don't raise them. We just got her at a Chickenstock from a breeder who was trying to improve the line (it's a very limited bloodline, I'm told) and she was not show quality. We just liked her because she was lovely, and turned out to be very sweet as well. How do you like your Swedish Flower hens? I've seen them on Greenfire Farms website and they were quite striking.
