Poultry Breeding & Showing Class in Sonoma County CA

I enjoyed doing it. Thank you all for the nice card and gift certificate. I think chicken people are some of the best folks around.

Thanks to Kim, Karen and Maureen who did some of the behind the scenes organizing. Great job ladies!!

So much to learn and so little time......I hope I hit on some of the points you folks wanted to cover.

Walt

Oh yes Walt you did, but leave it up to me to think of all the things I didn't ask after I was back home & back to normal. We didn't even talk about incubation problems. I meant to ask your method but forgot. W@hat do you use & how to you set it? do you candle & when & do you change humidity at lockdown etc...etc...etc.........LOL

I thought you were talking about the frizzle hen......

Who, ME???

I posted this in the N California thread just in case no one is reading this one anymore!

Here it is several days later and I have a question for Walt or anyone else who wants to chime in! I was able to see Cheryl's breeding pens at the ranch yesterday. I was very impressed with them. Her birds live well!!! I am just dreaming about breeding in the future so I'm gathering all the info I can at this planning stage. I was wondering what the ideal size is for a breeding pen? Is it determined by how much room you have or is a large pen not good for breeding? Do you keep your breeding birds in separate pens all year long or do you only breed them for a set period of time each year? Do any of you allow your breeders some free ranging or do you supplement their diet with greens? Now I have questions after the poultry class is over!

Just curious...is this an exclusive poultry club for a certain area in N. CA or specific breed? Looks like you all had a great time, whatever it was you did!

By the way, someone mentioned that "chicken people" must be NICE people. You are so correct! Whenever I meet someone with chickens, it's like meeting an old friend. And, when I go to someone's house that has chickens, I always ask, "Can I see your chickens?" I've never been turned down, instead we spend "hours" admiring the birds and discussing chicken stuff!

Nope, nothing exclusive or specific about this group - just a bunch of us chickenpeople. Kim (capayvalleychick) came up with the idea of a class & did a wonderful job of getting it organized.
I think the idea first showed up in the "California Northern" thread. I'm sure you'd be more than welcome if/when there's another get together!

An old timer from Maine Bob Murphy (got his name from Bob Blosl) just called me - I had contacted him back in December about getting some of his silver pencil flock - well out of the blue, he calls and says he's got a real good looking one year old rooster for me!!! Can you believe it....Dreams do come true.
