Poultry Breeding & Showing Class in Sonoma County CA

Oooh, I just happen to have some major yummy hot pepper jelly and some pomegranate jelly I made in December. The hot pepper jelly is the bomb over cream cheese and crackers. Would love Marans chicks or eggs if no chicks..
Cheryl, I didn't think outside of chickens for trading. I have my jellies too.
GREAT! I will let you know on Saturday if I have extra Marans chicks (various assortment--whatever is left after I fill my previous orders) to bring. I can bring a feeder, waterer...hmm...I suppose a brooder light as well! Ok, no worries. You can take home the box that I'll bring them in. If I get any extra. Again, I'll PM you. Take the recipe above, change for an unflavored goat cheese log, add crab or shrimp on top of jelly, and it's even yummier!

Update: I only have OE eggs left now to trade, besides wine!

KIM! Yes, Mareks is prevalent in Sonoma County. However, if your birds never leave the room, and are caged, and don't dig in the dirt, it shouldn't be a problem. Most of us vaccinate up here. I can't answer about whether a vaccinated bird may be able to give it to your un-vaccinated flock. I suppose if they shed the virus (ie were carriers but asymtomatic?) it might be possible. When we had the UC Davis poultry people up here for a talk last Fall, they led us to believe that it was prevalent CA-wide. Why not call them and check?

Question: Are all the cages in use? Or were more found? I only have a medium dog carrier available to bring birds in, which my Splash Marans roo could be in most of the time, but I will want to bring him out for viewing.
Thanks,
Dawn

Cheryl, I have one pair of white runner ducks. I can bring you some eggs. I don't know their lines - I bought them at the Stockton show, but the guy said his stock had won their variety there when I talked to him at Fresno.
I have some Silver Laced Wyandotte eggs which I can bring if anyone wants them. I have some older chicks of that breeding too, as well as Blue Laced Red Wyandotte chicks.

I'd love some duck eggs! woohoo what do you want to trade?

The only source that we have found for exhibition cages is in Morgan Hill, but I don't think any of us are close enough to be able to pick them up. Petaluma Fairgrounds said that theirs are in too bad of shape. If anyone has a connection with them, try and see if you can borrow a couple.

Judy is bringing 1 cage. Catherine is sending 3, not the same size, along with Maureen, who is bringing 1, so that's 4. 5 total.
These will probably be what Walt will use for his demos.
I think that he's going to use Cheryl's birds for the demo, so hers will be in those cages. At least, I think that's how it will work. So, Dawn, I'm not sure if there will be an extra exhibition cage, unless the one that Judy is bringing is for you???

Michele might either make or bring any she can find. Carrie is going to call around to try & find some.
Karen & Cheryl are bringing their own wire dog crates or pet carriers. Any one else who has extra wire crates might bring those as an alternative, since we don't have many poultry cages.

I wanted to buy some but there aren't any local sources and none that I could afford. I bought a wire 30x30 rabbit cage at Tractor Supply. Have to put it together today, but the photo made it look similar to a poultry cage.
I'm bringing my birds in that and Varikennels, because that's all I have.

Anyone bringing birds, please bring your own feed & water cups & shavings, please.

Dawn, thanks for answering my question.

My silver penciled rooster is loving my girls TOO much and their back feathers are broken, so I'm a bit embarrassed bringing them but I really feel lucky at the same time, because they need a good critique as I probably will be reducing the number of girls in that pen.

I'll bring whatever cages I have

If anyone has additional topics to discuss, there should be plenty of time to discuss them Sunday. I don't have an agenda, so we should be able to cover a lot.

That's great Walt..... I was hoping for along Q & A session. Right now I am having a problem with fertility & don't know what to do to boost it. I already feed a good grain mix so don't know what to use to boost fertility.

I have some silkie cockerels available if anyone is interested - 2 buff and 2 white. The buffs are 8 months old and the whites are 4 months old. I am not going to be able to go to the class (previous commitment on Sunday) but I am pretty sure that Cheryl would be willing to transport them. They are all very friendly, and I just want to find nice homes for them. They come from good breeders - if you are interested pm me and I can send pictures and resumes.

Have fun everyone, and I'm sorry I won't be able to attend!
