Brereton's book which you tried is probably a step or two up the ladder in terms of difficulty and that is why it didn't make sense for you at this point. There are some parts that might get you started however. I'd start with pages 86-91 just don't get caught up in his specific color examples. 97-100 and 105 is a little more complicated but still contains some basic info.

From there I might jump to this website

And slowly and repeatedly try your hand at Part I. Some of it is kind of hard to follow, but you might be ok to get through it. It may take a couple of times working on it to get it.

Once you worked with these, you can always come back here and more specific genetics questions.

I forgot to mention another book you might try. Brian Reeder wrote An Introduction to Form Feathering of the Domestic Fowl. The first half of the book has a lot of basic genetics in it and it's pretty readable. It is available from Amazon as a Kindle Book if you have an eReader. It might not be the greatest book written, but the basics aren't too bad in it.
