Brereton's book which you tried is probably a step or two up the ladder in terms of difficulty and that is why it didn't make sense for you at this point. There are some parts that might get you started however. I'd start with pages 86-91 just don't get caught up in his specific color examples. 97-100 and 105 is a little more complicated but still contains some basic info.
From there I might jump to this website

And slowly and repeatedly try your hand at Part I. Some of it is kind of hard to follow, but you might be ok to get through it. It may take a couple of times working on it to get it.
