Poultry nipples-Farmtek

I wrapped teflon tape around the nipples threds. Mine were all leaking at first. After I screwed them back in with the teflon tape, I put some silicone arond the nipples, and all leaking stopped.

What size pipe is everyone using? That could be my problem. I read somewhere on here to use 3/4" but I'm starting to think that's too small. two of the three nipples that were leaking are fixed with the push in style nipples from qc supply. The screw in ones kept leaking. I have to change the other one in the morning. Also, did everyone use round or square pipe? Does that make a difference?

Yeah, I caulked around all of mine thinking it would be an easy fix, but my chickens pecked all of the caulk off, so I re-did it and they pecked it off again. So, that just won't work for me.

I used 1/2 inch round PVC. I couldn't find the square stuff anywhere in my area. You ask for square PVC and they look at you like you're from outer space.

I tried to order the square stuff from Farm Tech and the shipping was going to be over $100.

They said UPS won't ship anything over 8' long. When I called their customer service they said they would cut them to 8" for me. I thought that was very accomidating, but I had already bought the round by the time they had gotten back to me, and I replied to them that I woud try it first. I too had the leaking problem the first time around, so I cut the run off and put in a union, so I could take the whole thing back in the shop, and then wrapped the threds with teflon tape, and that did the trick. The union will give me the oppertunity to redo it again if necessary without taking the whole thing apart. I did put a bead of silicone around the nipples as extra reinforcement. The little red dishes cover up the area where the silicone is so the chickens can't peck it off. I'm very happy with the results.

No, I haven't used it yet. I thought the caulk would work, but it didn't. I replaced the screw in ones that were leaking with the push in style nipples that have the rubber around them. They are working so far. If I have more problems, I will definitely go get some teflon tape and try again.

After reading through this whole thred, and seeing where people are tearing out their whole system when they have a leaking problem. I just wanted to mention there are PVC pipe unions. You can put them anywhere you want in your system and they just unscrew. That way if you are having a leak you just unscrew the pipe with the nipples in it. If you are having problems with the bucket, you just unscrew it below the bucket. A worth while investment, and saves a lot of time and hassle. I'll post a picture of the bucket end of my system. You can see the union below the bucket.
