Move you old waterers over close to the new ones and keep some water in the cups for a day or 2 then remove the old ones but be sure to keep some water in the cups the chickens will figure it out when they get thirsty

My birds were pecking at the nipples before I could get the water to them. To tell you the truth it blew my mind. Like Chris said if you hit the nipples enough to fill the cups they will drink from the cups, and then their natural curiosity will get them pecking at the nipples in no time. I took the old waterer out, and they seem to be doing fine. If they get thirsty they will figure it out. Kind of like a dog that won't eat. Eventually when they get hungry enough they eat.
I just went out and measured, and the PVC is 19 inches from the ground and the red cups are 16 inches off the ground. That seems to be working fine for the girls.
I became the proud parent of 17 chicks on April 3, (first chicks), and have had fun watching them in the brooder. At first I used old towels, changing them 3 times a day, not wanting them to get spraddle leg, I then removed the towels, and put in pine chips instead. Good news is, the poo is disquised more. The bad news is, the chicks already are scratching maniacs, chips flying everywhere including filling their water dish.
After reading all the positive buzz about them, I bought a dozen of the screw in nipple waterers a couple of weeks ago, thinking to use them for when my chicks get out of the brooder.
Yesterday, at 5 days old, I decided to give them a beginner nipple waterer. I thought, "Why not?" Well, it took all of 5 minutes before the first chick started to peck at it in curiosity, and less than an hour for ALL of them to be working furiously at it! This is fun, one would peck, another would slurp the drop, and they all would watch! I'm still keeping the water dish in for back up, I only have one nipple for 17 chicks so far...but this is going to be great!
I used an empty mustard container, removing the label in hot water, and then simply hung it from the wire mesh in the top of my brooder. It is important to use the 11/32" drill bit...
Thanks to everybody for their info, especially where to buy them. ; )
Here's another tip I've learned: for my chicks that I have in wire cages- if the wire on the cage can't support a homemade gallon nipple waterer, I use hamster bottles.
Can anyone tell me where I can find "red" poultry nipples. The only place I have seen them is on the following site: http://www.avianaquamiser.com/chickenwaterers
The problem with this is that you have to buy a kit for 15 $'s and you only get one nipple.
And if are using a nipple watering system for your chickens; "How does it work for you?".
Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
