We used the push in type for the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. The rubber grommet that comes with the nipple sealed just fine and there wasn't any leaking at all. We did not need to use caulk or sealant. Last night we put the poultry nipples on hamster bottles for the 4 week old chicks. It is hilarious watching them play with the bottles. We have a metal screen over the rubbermaid container they are in and just hung the bottles with hanger wire. It is so much cleaner to water the birds this way.

Hi,

Would the push-in type of nipples work on thicker PVC? Because that's the kind I ordered. I could use them for a quick bucket waterer, which would come in handy, and order screw-in kind if I have to. But I'd prefer to just use them on my pipe waterer. And I got mine from QC Supply. They offered cheaper shipping options (USPS) than Farmtek and the nipples were cheaper.

After having used the poultry nipples from QC since day 3 of chicks, (they are pushing 6 weeks old now) I am always pleasantly amazed at how clean the water and the inside of the chick's house is kept. After I close them in at night, making sure they have plenty of food and water (1/2 gallon), I go to bed knowing that if they get hungry and thirsty before it warms up enough in the morning, they have food and water.

One caveat though...I made them an outside water for daytime out of a #10 can (gallon sized?) with one end cut open, and a couple of holes 1"up and then fill it up and put an old pie pan over it then flop the whole thing over, a little water trickles out and fills the base. Boy do they love taking big swigs from that!

I imagine it being similar to us taking a teaspoon full of water at a time to taking a mouthful. While a teaspoon will work, we certainly wouldn't prefer it!

So, my thoughts are, while they might do fine taking one drop at a time, sometimes having a full beak-full can be wonderful! I'm going to provide the water for inside the coop with the nipples and a bucket, but have a bigger source for them to get a mouthful outside.

p.s. when I bought them from QC, I bought 3 times what I needed figuring to spread the cost of shipping and to have spares when something breaks. That made them very, very reasonable, certainly still less expensive than a big watering can.

I have been suprised at the number of orders I have gotten for 10 nipples and more. The price has been reduced per nipple for orders of more than five as the fixed costs are not as great per nipple. I've been dealin.

I have both the nipples that F-T and QC supply have plus another one. In addition to that when I know more about your needs I have a lot of unique or hard to find plumbing stuff that a lot of people have been appreciative about finding.

The link to CE Shepeherd was just about the wire. They do not have nipple drinkers.

Nipple drinkers short cycle the drinking process. Notice how chickens will often raise their head and let the water flow down the throat after getting a mouthful. So, I have a few notes on nipples. I got the push in type from Tek supply, and used sched. 40 PVC. I found that the 11/32 hole was too small and ruined the grommets when I put them in. I used a slightly larger bit, unfortunately, I couldn't read what size it was, either 23/64 or 9-9.5mm. That worked better, but I still had to put a socket over them and tap them in with a hammer. But, no leaks 1st try! and no caulk! If you are ordering the push in types, do yourself a favor and get a few extra grommets. Also, much to my chagrin, after I ordered them I found a supplier here in Portland Oregon. Urban Farm supply on SE 21st and Belmont, I could have saved the $10 shipping charge. I thought $10 for shipping was a little steep for 6 little nipples, but thats because they also send a big heavy catalog with it, and a free pair of gloves. Now I just need to regulate the water pressure from my garden hose to make the nipples work without a bucket.

So, are you saying nipple waterers shouldn't be used with turkeys? Or just that they'd prefer a bowl?

I have 12 turkeys in a pen with 3 bantam chickens. I thought I'd have to put in two waterers so they both could reach. What I found is that by hanging it halfway between them, the turkeys bend over to drink and the banties s t r e t c h up and drink. Obviously I like this compromise, only one bucket to make, clean, and fill, but am I shortchanging one or the other or both?

I like the idea of keeping the nipples inside and giving them a pan of water outside. Until I get tired of refilling/cleaning the pan, lol. The nipple system is just so much CLEANER. But I don't want to worry about my birds being dehydrated because drinking is unpleasant either.
