Powdered Duramycin (oxytetracycline) antibiotic in water

the link you provided calls for 2.5 tbs per gallon, but you mentioned only 1 tbs per gallon for the 800mg dose. I didn't want to give too much, and now I'm confused. My chickens are getting a very wet / rattle cough. They're about 4-5 months old now. Thanks so much

  • The Duramycin 10 dose is 1 tablespoon per gallon
  • The Oxytetracycline dose is 2.5 tablespoons per gallon

Which one do you have?

This is so great! I just googled what to do with the Oxy, with tablespoons instead of milligrams, and this was the first result. I was wondering why there were so many people looking at an old thread like this lol. Thanks for clearing it up Kathy!

You're welcome and good luck!

Then it's 2.5 Tablespoons per gallon. Welcome to BYC!

X2. Also, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), in combination with tetracyclines, allows for better absorption. Take 1/2 tsp of ascorbic acid powder and add it to the drinking solution. Withhold calcium additions to diet like oyster shell. After the antibiotic treatment, supplement with vitamin-electrolyte and probiotic soluble powder in waterers for 3 days. Remind me not to recommend L-S 50, a common antibiotic combination for respiratory and bacterial infections in chicks. It is now being manufactured in China.

I have 5 sick chickens in my flock of 30. The ones that aren't sick look fine and are laying well. I don't want to treat the entire flock and discard eggs for 3 weeks if I can get away with it. So I have the 5 isolated for treatment. They are pretty lethargic and don't seem to drink lot. I would like to give them the antibiotic dose by syringe in concentrated formula. Can anyone tell me how to mix the oxytetracycline powder to give orally by syringe?

You could learn to tube feed and tube the water every 6-8 hours.
