PPBA Show in Stockton, CA in January?

How about hatching eggs from a good laying breed, hatchery or breeder quality. I'd prefer nice quality of course, but whatever is available. My best friend wants to buy some eggs and hatch them, but she cant keep birds at her place so she'd have to keep them here. I told her if that's the case, she's getting a good laying breed so they pay their way!

We dont need many eggs, so if you come PM me breeds/prices, I'd appreciate it!

Lewis has caught the hatching bug. That's all Linda's (gryeyes) fault, but her brooder full of chicks just overcame my husband with their plethora of fluffy cuteness....

Hey Friends with Marans chickens of all varieties,

I was able to get the entry form and egg show info for Stockton. Below is the general information. If you are not attending, and want to mail in an entry, please send them to Sean Lail, 2808 Bonita Ave, Antioch, CA 94509. Entries cost $5, all color varieties are welcome and will be judged separately.

All eggs will be destroyed after the show. If you are attending the show, eggs and entries can be brought directly there.

Both national Marans clubs will have tables, merchandise and information on the breed, varieties and breeders lists of where to find hatching eggs, chicks or grown stock.

EGG SHOW RULES



ELIGIBILITY:
Any person who owns Marans chickens may exhibit eggs in the Show. You do not have
to be a local resident to enter.

DIVISIONS:
The Show will have separate Divisions for color/variety.
Cuckoo Division, Wheaten Division, Blue Division, Black Copper Division, White Division, Blue Copper Division, ect.
Number of divisions depends on number of participants. You may enter as many divisions as you like. All color varieties of Marans are welcome.

DEFINITION:
A minimum of three (3) Eggs, exhibited together in one carton, shall be considered as one (1) Entry. Eggs must be fresh.

ENTRY FORMS:
Completed Entry Forms can be included when bringing entries in person to the Egg Show.
When mailing Eggs, Entries must be received by ____________, the day before the show.

FEE:
There is $5.00 Entry fee for eggs. We would like to use this opportunity to inform the public of the Marans Breed and to prepare for APA upcoming approvals.

DISPLAY:
Eggs will be displayed for the public. All egg entries will be clearly marked with the exhibitor’s # and will note the variety in which the entry is to compete. Exhibitors may enter eggs in each variety.

JUDGING:
Judging is scheduled for __________ on _______________.
Judging will take place on site by an APA licensed judge. Eggs will be judged on the following scale:

1. Shell color - 7 points
• # 1 to 3 - 0 points (Does Not Qualify )
• # 4 - 1 point
• # 5 - 2 points
• # 6 - 3 points
• # 7 - 4 points
• # 8 - 5 points
• # 9 - 7 points
* Color is judged, based on the MCF color scale.

2. Shape - 1 point
• The ideally shaped egg is broad, ensuring a large and well rounded dome, with greater length than width.
• The sides are equal and symmetrical, rounding off to a smaller end, which should not be too pointed.
• We are looking for a stocky egg with a small top.

3. Texture - 2 points
• Matt - 0 points
• Satin - 1 point ( The shell should feel smooth to the touch all over. )
• Bright - 2 points ( Bloom and appearance will only be present with freshness. )

4. Uniformity - 3 points
• One point more added for each egg, that is matching and uniform in the set.
• (Eggs laid by the same bird are more likely to be successful. )
5. Total Possible Points - 13

AWARDS:
First place entry in each variety will receive a Blue Ribbon. Second and third place over all Egg Entries will receive Red & White Ribbons There will also be a trophy for the over all winner. Exhibitors may pick up their ribbons following the poultry show. Unclaimed ribbons will be mailed to the address given on the entry form.

Entry forms can be found in the premium book as well as the Marans_Chicken_Club Yahoo Group web site.

All entries that are mailed need to arrive prior to the day before the show. Eggs may be brought to the show no later than 9am on the day of judging. Entries needs to be paid before or at the time of exhibition. Anyone not having payment in and sent eggs will not have their entries judged.

Note: All Eggs shipped in will be destroyed the night after the show.

Why? Well, for one, some of them eggs have come through hail, sleet, snow and freezing weather, so viability??? probably not so much.

Secondly, if you have been working with your birds, you probably do not want your eggs to end up somewhere you didn't intend. For example, there is a growing issue of FBC becoming available through hatcheries. Since their goals may not be in-line with yours, would you want your stock to end-up as part of a hatchery's? There are undesirable qualities in any breed, but if no one is culling with a firm hand and a keen eye, the color will fade and the combs will become even more laden with sprigs, a disservice to the breed and all of the fans.

Third there is an issue of disease control and general husbandry.

Hence, all eggs are destroyed. Egg shows are very beneficial and educational to the breeders, it helps give a benchmark to where you are in terms of your flock and goals and allows you to compare to other fanciers from all around the country.

In the MOAC, we hosted a show in Arkansas (Heart of the Ozarks) where a separate egg class was held that allowed not only the egg, but its producer (hen or pullet) to be judged. It was well accepted and received, afterall, the dark egg is but one component, and this egg show class, allowed the hen and egg to be considered as a package in its entirety. I would like to see this class/presentation adopted by all production or dual purpose breeds, but then this is my bias, and I am just one peep in the giant flock of fanciers. lol.

I have to agree with you. And I hope to participate in the class someday.... comparing eggs by pictures wouldn't even come close!
I'd still want mine back if I showed them....this time of year there aren't many eggs at all.... but since I only have 2 cuckoo marans hens, who are not yet laying, I'll just enjoy looking at yours (if they're on display??)
(I'm kind of working on cuckoo Faverolles; since they cross bred last year, so am in the market for cuckoo hens or hatching eggs.... no selling to hatcheries here!)

I need to cage-train three of my birds for the upcoming show, is there a chance anyone has wire cages, like at shows that I can borrow?

Hey Cheryl,

I use wire dog kennels for my large fowl. I have 42" long ones that have a side door and use the "puppy" divider to split them down the middle. They have worked good for me. Check Craigs List since you are in suburbia/urbania (lol I'm way out in the boonies) or new I got them on ebay last week for $32.99 plus shipping. Heck of a deal, especially with my ebay bucks, three of these crates with shipping cost me $110. For my bantams, I use the three-tiered rabbit cages.
