prayer warriors (following Jesus Christ, everyone welcome)

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect... Matthew 5:48

Okay i wasnt expecting there to be a verse on it haha

But still....

Maybe we are supposed to try our hardest to be perfect but we are human. There is no such thing as perfect. We've all sinned. That's why Jesus died for us. If we were perfect we wouldn't need Him. And I'm pretty sure it doesn't say to turn people away which is the context I was using it in

Kelsey, SG did a good job explaining the text about "hating family" to follow Christ. It means that Jesus must be first in our lives. Jesus must be first and foremost. I must place Him and my relationship with Him before that with my husband, with my parents, with my kids, friends, employer. That, my friend is why it is so very important that when you enter the dating arena, and get to the point where you are establishing a relationship with the man who will become your husband, you must be equally yoked with him. To date or marry a man who does not love Jesus as you do is to invite a life time of heart ache. To be forced to choose allegiance to Jesus, or to your spouse and children. If your husband loves Jesus, then you and he become a cord of three strands, with Jesus in the middle. It will not easily be broken.

Regarding worthy:

I am a sinner. I was born into sin. Probably, the first word out of my mouth, after perhaps Mama and Daddy was NO! And I used that word often. Even before a baby is able to talk, he is able to voice his rebellion. Ever tried to pick up a baby who doesn't want to get picked up? Ever try to give medicine to a baby? Ever try to put a baby into a car seat when he doesn't want to go? Rebellion, much? Oh yeah. We are born to rebellion.

Romans 3:10 says, "There is none righteous, no not one." You could substitute the word worthy. In spite of my great sin and rebellion, Jesus took on human form. God became man, so that He, being the only human ever to walk this earth without any sin. He did this, because He alone is worthy. He alone is worthy. And I will say it again... HE ALONE IS WORTHY.
Revelation 5:12 In a loud voice they were saying: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"

Jesus, and only Jesus is worthy to be the perfect Lamb of God. John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

It is Jesus, and Jesus alone who makes me worthy to enter the presence of God. His shed blood covers my sins. Because He died for my sins, I am now an adopted daughter of God. And because I am now an adopted daughter of God, I am worthy. Not through any merit of my own, only because Jesus has redeemed me, and stands as the one and only mediator between myself and God.
1 Timothy 2:5King James Version (KJV)

5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

It's okay haha sorry for being so defensive/rude/almost angry lol And trueee haha
Well, I think you have valid questions and concerns! I didn't see it as defensive or angry, I guess :) We can do better as the Church to not try to make a huge wall that seems impossible to surmount just in order to "get to heaven", but the truth is, there's nothing WE can do. It's Jesus that did it. We just try to use the spirit to guide us and help ease our burden in trying to keep from temptation while we're here. It's not completely hopeless, we CAN change from our sinful ways. Most people don't really want to hear that they might need to repent and change their life priorities; they want to just believe and go to heaven. It's so easy but so very dangerous to try to take the " wide, easy path"...

Hey thanks LG! That brings the other side of what I think TKFG was trying to say maybe? I was talking from the standpoint of being a Christian, I am worthy of God's love. Through Jesus...But like ocap said, we dont HAVE to have it if we dont want it, though ;) Worthy of praise, now no, we will NEVER be worthy of that.

Thank you :)

And yeah, I think maybe the problem is we were thinking of worthy in different contexts/situations from one anothet

Yes, that's pretty much what I meant, worded much better! lol

Food for thought.....

When Jesus says, "Be ye perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect," does that mean we can attain perfection, and should we?

There are a couple of things we need to understand about this statement. In the first place, the word that is translated “perfect” literally means “be complete.” So often, the New Testament and the Old Testament will describe people as being upright and righteous—not in the sense that they have achieved total moral perfection, but rather that they have reached a singular level of maturity in their growth in terms of spiritual integrity. However, in this statement, it’s certainly legitimate to translate it using the English word perfect. For example, “Be ye complete as your heavenly Father is complete.” Now remember that your heavenly Father is perfectly complete! So if we are to mirror God in that way, we are to mirror him in his moral excellence as well as in other ways. In fact, the basic call to a person in this world is to be a reflection of the character of God. That’s what it means to be created in the image of God. Long before the Sermon on the Mount, God required the people of Israel to reflect his character when he said to them, “Be ye holy even as I am holy.” He set them apart to be holy ones. The New Testament word for that is saints.

Now to the question of whether we can, in fact, achieve moral perfection in this world. If Jesus says to be perfect, the assumption would be that he would not require us to do something that is impossible for us to achieve. Therefore, there are Christians, many Christians, who believe that, indeed, it is possible for a person to reach a state of moral perfection in this life. That view is called perfectionism, and people develop a theology whereby there’s a special work of the Holy Spirit that gives them victory over all sin or all intentional sin that renders them morally perfect in this world. The mainstream of Christianity, however, has resisted the doctrine of perfectionism chiefly because we see the record of the greatest saints in biblical history and in church history who to a person confessed the fact that they, to their dying day, struggled with ongoing sin in their lives. Not the least of which, of course, was the apostle Paul, who talked about his ongoing struggle with sin.

Can a person be perfect? Theoretically, the answer to that is yes. The New Testament tells us that with every temptation we meet, God gives us a way to escape that temptation. He always gives us enough grace to overcome sin. So sin in the Christian life, I would say, is inevitable because of our weakness and because of the multitude of opportunities we have to sin. But on a given occasion, it is never, ever necessary. So in that sense, we could theoretically be perfect, though none of us is.

I just want to thank everyone that said a little prayer for us today. It was a loooong day of cleaning up our yard, neighbor's yards, and neighbors of neighbor's yards and unfortunately picking through what's left of a friend's house. Everyone is in good spirits though. As good as they can be. Met with Pastor today and with it being Ash Wednesday, ended the day with church. Couldn't ask for a better end to a stressful--and emotional--day. "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return..." A good reminder that everything here is just temporary!
