The man must feel terrible! That's such a tragic accident. My thoughts are with the family.

Maybe, maybe not. I lived in Tx for 7 years and my Grandparents on my Mothers side were true southerners in La. The ones in La complained about the colored folk having equal rights but never complained about losing the war. Never heard anything about it at all in Tx. It's just business as usual. If there was as much hate directed against our government as is so often depicted by some people this country wouldn't exist anymore:D

The reason I ask about owning guns is that it is not part of the culture here. Some people, for example farmers, have guns usually shot guns, and the hunting of rabbits, hares, pheasants, partridges, in season, does go on. The hunting of deer is illegal except on private land.

Keeping guns in the home is strictly controlled and they have to be kept in a locked gun cabinet that the police come and inspect. Police are not generally armed here, except for anti-terrorist police at the airports etc.

Sadly there are some illegal guns here, usually hand guns, and now and again some one gets shot in a raid. It is always a big deal here when that happens. Most recently a couple of young boys chased another into a shop and shot at him, seriously injuring a 5 year old girl in the chest. The neighbourhood wasted no time in handing him over to the police. There is a line over which, even in the roughhest neighbourhoods, no one should cross.

The right to bear arms here means, I don't have to wear long sleeves.

Not to get off topic of this little girl and her family. I am still praying that she is okay and makes a full recovery. It does depend on what type of 22 bullet he was using regular or hollow point. To the OP would you please keep us posted on any updates if it is not to much trouble. thank you.

To newfoundland I think the American people feel that owning a gun does make them feel safer. I know in a lot of countries that owning a fire arm is not allowed or there are strict rules. I always was taught that if guns are outlawed then only outlaws only will have them. It seems that the criminals can and do get guns no matter how many anti-gun laws there are.

If guns were outlawed, then you would be an outlaw if you possessed one. We have had a history of owning guns since this country was being formed. Nobody has ever tried to outlaw them. The threat is used as a political football and usually comes out of the closet when there is a big incident like down in Az. No proposed law has ever gotten traction. The only real control they have had is the outlaw of high capacity semi automatics.

I agree that if by some freak incident guns were outlawed about 50% of gun owners would turn them in. The rest would be outlaws and actual criminals would still have free access to them. The safety I get from having a gun is tempered by the more likely danger to my children. If they are strictly controlled within the family and only used by someone that is good under stress and is trained to go up against a criminal, then they would add safety.

Really not trying to cause a ruckus. I fully agree with the fact that guns make a lot of Americans feel safer. I just don't agree with the premise that most gun owners have them because they are worried about one of the freest governments in the world turning against them and needing them to shoot each other.

I was not talking about the civil war its self.... Just the things the US army has did over the last 200+ years to its on people.

I dont think most parts of the US keep guns because they are afraid of the government. Some do an for good reason. But I do think that most people don't have to fear the government because we have guns an that we would not have the free country we have today if the people were not armed.

I was not going to post this but feel I must now I don't fear the American Military but I do fear the UN forces which Clinton signed a law allowing them to come into a country and take over if they feel the need. Plus being of Native American descent I know how well the government is truthful. They lie and steal and take what they want. If you believe otherwise great but there is to much history to show that they are not as great and noble as some would believe. I think there has been laws that they tried to pass that is part of gun control. My DH is ex-air force and has perfect mark men ship. I hope and pray that I never have to use a gun against another person but if it is that person or my family then they lose. In Texas there is a whole another mind set, everyone where I lived owned guns. They also passed the make my day law and have now added other laws to say that you can shoot people who are breaking in or trying to steal your livestock. I hope that we never lose the right to own guns because if we do then I don't want to know whats next. The Men who wrote the Constitution wrote the 2nd amendment just so the government knew that citizens where armed and it would be harder to fight them. This is the last I am saying on this on this thread this thread is for the poor family who need prayers more then anything right now.

You're right. Someone else brought up their opinion about why Americans have guns. I just wanted to clarify that his views were not consistent with the majority. No real purpose in debating what may or may not occur as pertains to our government. There are no facts to support a debate either way.

Yes the original post was about delivering good thoughts to the poor girl who got shot by accident. Hopefully she will be okay. Hopefully other people will read the story and learn something from it.
