The reason I ask about owning guns is that it is not part of the culture here. Some people, for example farmers, have guns usually shot guns, and the hunting of rabbits, hares, pheasants, partridges, in season, does go on. The hunting of deer is illegal except on private land.
Keeping guns in the home is strictly controlled and they have to be kept in a locked gun cabinet that the police come and inspect. Police are not generally armed here, except for anti-terrorist police at the airports etc.
Sadly there are some illegal guns here, usually hand guns, and now and again some one gets shot in a raid. It is always a big deal here when that happens. Most recently a couple of young boys chased another into a shop and shot at him, seriously injuring a 5 year old girl in the chest. The neighbourhood wasted no time in handing him over to the police. There is a line over which, even in the roughhest neighbourhoods, no one should cross.
The right to bear arms here means, I don't have to wear long sleeves.
