Prego Mare Thread ~*New Foal~June 17th*~ NEW PICS: Post #82!!!

oh and btw babies come out when they darn well please lol, its dark in there they cant see the calendar.

I know. They need to install a light or something in there xD. Thanks for the info I really appreciate it! Another question though: I thought the foal starts to position itself about 24 hours before birth. If TigerLily foals sooner, meaning this week. It would be about 5 weeks early. Would a foal born that early be healthy? Also her bag is filling again & ive been checking her daily but I havent been able to see what the milk looks like or how sticky it is.

Generally mares can go safely 3 weeks early or 3 weeks late.

I'd just keep an eye on her, the foal might move again. Apple's foal moved all over before finally dropping down to "boat bottom" before being foaled out.

i say its edema, try making her walk for 20 minutes strait. when a mares belly looks like a "V" from the side, usually means the foal is in position.

good luck, she is a pretty mare!

Looks like some edema. I have one mare that gets it bad with every foal, my other two , and both are older than the one, do not get it. As long as she is moving around, eating and drinking I would not worry about it.

Could someone please explain what edema is? Thanks for the compliment Shadow

. Normally she moves around a lot, walking all over the pasture & stuff but she does move. I went out to feed a second ago & instead of coming to the gate to, get treats, neigh, & kick it she was in the barn with her legs sort of spread. I think she was trying to relieve the pressure on her hooves poor thing. I did the cap refill thing & it took 3 or 4 sec for the color to come back 0_0.

Edema is swelling, usually weight of the foal, circulation. Pregnant women get swelled feet/legs, horses usually get it on their bellys, sometimes in the legs. That is a lot of weight to be toting around for a long time, that baby is gonna put pressure on that mare, somewhere.

A lot of later term mares will stretch out, it relieves pressure, makes them feel better. A maiden mare will do all kinds of weird things, they have no clue what is going on. My maiden this year, rubbed her belly on trees, I swear she was trying to squeeze that foal out.

Some types of fish do something similar xD. Anyways the boat bottom is still there. Im just happy shez not a maiden
