Prego Mare Thread ~*New Foal~June 17th*~ NEW PICS: Post #82!!!

Tige's boat belly mostly went away & then came back, this morning, with a vengance. I was able to see what her milk looks like, & it looks clear with whitish swirled in.

Sounds like you are on the downhill slide now

Or not, she is a mare after all

My mare gets that every time she is pregnant at about 5 weeks before delivery. Edema. Looked like she had a car, oil pan under her belly. She can also swell some in the front legs. I just make sure she gets enough exercise. I actually made it worse the first year I put up a foaling camera. I would see her circling in her stall during the evening, so I would go out and give her more hay.

well that stopped her from walking, but it made the edema worse.

I know now that the boat belly isnt a real big deal, but it kinda creeps me out xP. Plus this will be the first horse ive had foal. I really hope I see her give birth. I plan to park my work truck in front of the barn (one side is completely open where the "runs" are) with a sleeping bag & air mattress in the bed & drink A LOT of caffeine. How soon after the white sticky milk & waxing do they normally foal? Ive heard 24 hours but I wanna make sure. I also heard from Shadow Paints that the mares "woohaa" turns bright red...

Really, it depends on the mares. My last one that foaled, had clear milk in the am, then turned opaque that evening, she never waxed or dripped, she foaled at 7 am the next morning. My older mare dripped white milk and waxed for 2 days before she foaled. It really depends on the mare. I highly recommend a book, by Teresa Jones, called the Complete Foaling Manual. Teresa was a Foaling Attendant and this book is a wealth of information. I still read it every year, even though I have done this for over 25 years. Not all mares are the same, and knowing all the signs to look for can make a big difference.

This has quite a few comments going, and I didn't get through all so forgive me if I repeat anything. The swelling, if it comes and goes is likely a pitting edema, just pooling fluid. If you can stick your finger into it and it leaves an indent, but eventually fills back out, that's what it is. If the swelling does not go away, or spreads to her legs and face, get your vet ASAP. As for foaling, I've been fortunate enough to attend a few of my mares, but most are tricky. The older they are the faster they go. I had a mare on the foaling cam, just start to show, as she lay down I ran out the door, down to the barn, and made it for the last push. She practically threw the foal across the stall!! She was a rescue and this was her 8th foal. I had a maiden mare go a month over, bag up several times, run milk, nothing...we did this over and over. One morning I went out and there was the foal, the mare didn't have a trace of blood on her (mostly white APHA), and she still looked pregnant:) Your best indicators are history. If she's done this before talk to her previous owners. If she's older and maiden, you'll have to sleep in her stall, hahaha:) Just remember this has been happening for thousands of years without us, chances are she'll be great. Common sense should kick in on your part, and always, always, always...call your vet. I've seen people rush in when they should stay put, and I've seen people wait way too long to call for help. If you are blessed enough to catch her, settle in to a nice quiet corner with your cell and enjoy:) Best of luck and there should be a thread for foal pics:) Yea!!!!

Update: Checked Tige's milk today & one teat squirted out no problems & the color looked clearish yellow. Its not quite amber yet but definitely on the way
