I think I have a premature kid coming. My doe has all the labor signs (clear discharge, VERY loose tail ligaments, head pressing, etc). She's only 1- 1 1/2 months along. I assume the kid(s) are goners, but will my doe be okay?

When a doe slips a kid at less than two months into the pregnancy, the usual symptoms are just a bloody tail. Did I misread your post? Are you saying the doe is one and a half months along or that it is one and a half months before she is due?

Sorry, I meant that she is only 1 month along, with 4 months to go.

If you can get a vet to check her it would be best. If not, keep an eye on her. There isn't much can be done at this early stage. Usually they will pass it with no problem. Keep her in a quiet, draft free area with hay and water. If you have any goat drench give her a dose. If she's with a herd and separating her upsets her leave her with her friends. Watch for her to pass kids(s) and placenta. If she doesn't pass it and is obviously in distress, you will need a vet. Wish I could offer more. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on miscarriage in goats will pop in and help.
I hope all works out well.:hugs

  1. I had a lot of goats kid, but never one that early. I think the main concern for the doe would be blood loss if something went wrong. So i would check her frequently and keep her warm. I warm bucket of goat electrolytes might be helpful. Poor dear. I had 2 miscarriages myself and it is a miserable experience. Hugs for you and your goat!:hugs:hugs

A doe slipping a kid at one month gestation does not exhibit signs of labor. A bloody tail is it and at one month there most likely won't even be that. You are talking about an embryo that would probably fit in a teaspoon. The clear discharge sounds to me like she is in heat.
I thought the same thing, but wasn't sure why her tail ligaments would be loose and why the head pressing. I've never seen mine do that when in heat. Any ideas? I've been raising dairy goats for 10+ years and that threw me a bit. Could she be further along maybe????
