Preparing to set call and pekin duck eggs! Hatch day should be March 4, 2021 if all goes well!

Pics
I went on Ebay and got some Magpie call eggs to hatch from a guy right here in Iowa! The eggs are only on for a couple weeks, and they sold sky high.

I sold a lot of call ducklings last year locally. A girl and her brother won some awards at the fair showing them, that was pretty interesting. :) Here's some last year babies before I separated them into breeding pens.

Oh my they are gorgeous! Little Batgirl is a sweetie! That’s so special that they won awards! ❤️ I’m in love!

Today is day 12!! 14 days to go!! :fl

I have some disappointing news. Egg 5s that I’ve been watching appears to have quit. That was the one that had a larger air cell and hadn’t been looking good. Egg 2s might be a quitter as well. The veining isn’t very good. I’m leaving them just to be sure but it’s not looking good for those two.

Anyways the other 5 look great! Tons of movement and great veining! Air cells look well too. I’ll get some pictures of them and the suspected quitters on day 14.

so far egg 7s never started (was a yolker )

egg 4s quit on day 6/7

egg 5s looks like a quitter

egg 2s isn’t looking good

all the eggs that aren’t good so far have been from my Snowy call Squeegee. I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence or why. Last time I tried to hatch calls Squeegee’s eggs were the quitters too. Cami’s was the only one that hatched (peepers). One of Squeegee’s made it to hatch day and never internally pipped last time. Upon eggtopsy its organs were outside its body. Looked like a hernia by the yolk sac.

@Isaac 0 @WVduckchick
or @casportpony @Pyxis any ideas?

For reference I’ll give some background. Squeegee the duck in question will be 1 year old on March 23 of this year. I ordered her from a hatchery and her background is unknown. She seems very healthy and her eggs are all fertile so I’m not sure why they keep quitting. She’s such a gorgeous bird so it’d be a shame if all her eggs keep being duds. :hmm
Cami is exactly the same age from the same place and her eggs are doing well and her egg did well last hatch.
I’m totally baffled as to why, as I’ve never seen this in any of my other hens.

Also on a different note, notice anything funny in this photo? :p
I was going through the photos that google labeled and this gave me quite a chuckle! :lau:gig

p.s. should I ask for a refund since I received a false duck?

sorry to disappoint but little Splash the black bibbed call drake was certainly not a penguin last time I checked! :lau

@FunnyfarmMidwest , it could be pure coincidence or could be due to some other factor, such as eggshell thickness, and porosity; which less of both would presumably allow easier bacterial penetration into the egg.

Thank you for the reply. You might be right about the thickness and porosity. I notice that Squeegee’s eggs have thinner shells. With her eggs I can see the air cell through the outside before incubation. The egg shells are thinner in comparison to Cami’s which you cannot see the air cell by looking at them. I’m really hoping that things go differently for 9s. I believe it’s the only one of her eggs still developing. It looked really good yesterday so I’m hopeful. :fl :)

forgot to add: they do have free access to crushed oyster shells

Day 13 today. Halfway through! :fl :fl
13 days to go! Hoping all 5 of the remaining eggs will make it to hatch day and hatch out. I haven’t candled yet today but will do so when I get home from work. Keeping my fingers and toes crossed! March 4 will be hatch day!

Just got home and candled the eggs for the first time today. The remaining 5 are all looking great. Should I remove the quitters or leave one more day?
