Ernie, I use store bought 2% organic milk from the grocery store. It will work fine. I agree raw milk would be better, but any port in a storm.

Thanks Ginny
I had heard that Kefir could not be made with store bought milk because of pasteurization! Yep if you cant find Whole milk to make Kefir with and store bought work then I would say that is great! As long as you are getting your Kefir Probiotics then Its all good!

Actually, you can use soy milk or almond milk as readily as cow's milk. The only "dead" milk is super-pasteurized milk, something that I personally have never seen in a store, but I know it's out there; however, it's not the homogenized/pasteurized milk that you see in the dairy department.
Lucky for me I have ready access to raw fresh milk! It is good to know that you can use the others as well if for some reason I cant get to My supplier! Wow Soy milk would be a real expense as around here it is almost $3 A HALF GALLON! Compared to the $3 a GALLON that I give for raw milk! Just wish I could find a good supplier of Goats milk around here and try that as I really like the goat milk better!! I have heard that it makesa really superb Kefir!!
On another note I tried a taste of my Kombucha from the black tea the other day and OMG it is great also! Joe didn't you say you had given Kombucha to the chickens to try??? Or was that someone else on another thread???

Here I have to pay between $12 to $14 a gallon of raw milk. Hazard of living in a state that they actually raided a food co op like it was a drug place. It is still worth it since I find that the unhomogenized milk tastes creamier even with the same amount of fat since the fat molecules are larger and more digestible.
