Thanks for the welcome Miss Lydia and vmdanielsen! Since you asked, my first batch is now resting in the fridge. It was a bit sour but I did leave it in for 36 rather than 24 hours since we were out of town longer than expected, but it is kefir nontheless!!! The grains I got from the kefirlady have doubled in size! My entire family thought I was crazy for wanting chickens, and now they think I am well on my way to poisoning myself with this stuff. Oh well, more for me! We're moving soon, so my chicken plans have to be put on hold (and I was SOOOO close too! Spring is just around the corner!). I do want to start out with Seramas though. My son is absolutely enthralled with them. I'll sneak, erm... move onto the bigger birds later. Then I'll have someone to share my kefir with!

I think we should call ourselves the Kefir Krazies. I could never write out the long title suggested earlier, I don't think I could even remember the first letter abbreviation.... HA! Besides, I like the K.I.S.S. method. (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and apply it to many things in my life.

Oh yeah, Kiki says, "Hey". (That's a 'southern greeting' for those of you who are geographically challenged).

If anybody wants some SUPER Kefir grains......pm E.Marble, I got mine from him and they are growing like crazy. His shipping was excellent, they arrived in pristine condition. Thanks Ernie!

Hey Kiki and you are quite welcome! I am so glad that you enjoy the Kefir that Kiki is providing for you! Not bad for just kinda winging it on the shipping!! Have you tried aging the kifir with a vanilla bean yet! I aged some with vanilla extract and IT Was wonderful!! Happy Kefiring Sandi

Ernie

Haven't tried the vanilla bean yet, but made a chocolate/banana/peanutbutter smoothie and it's delicious.

Need some advice: when I strain and add my new kefir to the mellowing batch in the refrigerator each day, does that keep the whole batch from getting mellow and less tart? If so, do I need to have two refrigerator bottles at two different stages? It's pretty darn tart. I had to add a little sugar to my smoothie. Or am I just wimpy? HA!

Kiki and I are going to make up some bread dough tonight. I'll let you know how it tastes when I bake it in the next few days.

Ernie, I sent you a whole wheat bread recipe that I think will work nicely with the kefir. Let me know what you think.

Once you do get some chickens and get started You can give them Kefir too and You will be amazed at how much joy and pleasure they bring to you and as a Bonus Breakfast on a regular basis! Once I started with raising chickens they became My Little Prozacs and help me keep my sanity (Well at least they try)

There is nothing more relaxin than to sit in your back yard under a shade tree in the summer and watch the chickens scratch and dust and do some of their crazy little chicken antics!!

Ok so I am not sure where that came from but I couldn't resist adding to it and continuing with it for a laugh!!

Ernie

With that I think I am going to bed

Night all

You think we can market it as some sort of uber health food?
We'd have to share profits with Ginny, though....I think the beast is growing in her kitchen!

BTW Ginny, do you have a link that talks about growing mealworms? I'm tired of buying them, and my girls require me to bribe them for love....I walk up empty handed and they are like "UM....Do we know you....?"

For meal worms i followed the kind advice of these BYCers https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=425181

I
have not fed any yet to the bird as I want more to procreate so I can have more of them to feed I was thinking that they would be really gross, but they are kind of cool.

So, I have, oats sprouting, mealworms growing, ate my first DE, today (tasted like kaopectate) all because of BYC! Kombucha, no knead bread and kefir predate my current nuttiness!

I just figured that in the winter, my birds should have a fresh protein source. After the initial investment it should be very cheep (I mean cheap).

Where does one get Virgin coconut oil? Coconut oil is my favorite to massage with in the summer, but I think that mine is not food grade. any favorite brands?
