PROBIOTICS for you and your chickens

We're at 411 posts now......think we need our own forum? We could call it the"Mad scientist, nutrition nerds, chicken owners who have odd containers of fermenting products taking up counter space" forum.

The meal worm - sourdough bread sounds fabulous

I want to learn about raising my own mealworms!

I aged my last batch of kefir for two days with banana, vanilla extract and honey. Have been using it to make strawberry banana Smoothies. Yum!

Question: does everyone here have an issue with their kefir grains always being at the top of their container? I feel like all of my milk might not be getting cultured. I shake it or rock it to mix them up when I'm home but three days a week I'm gone from 8 am- 10 pm.

YES I agree we should have our own forum Now after Now guess what its like 413 post! Hmmmmm I like the Mad Scientist Chicken owner growing ODD and Fermented Things on Their counters and making Sourdough Meal worms! Kinda Ketchy Hmmmmmm! LOL

Hmmm Banana, Vanilla extract and Honey Now you are starting to sound like me Andrea! LOL I thought I had the corner on lets see what I can mix with my Kefir today!!! That does sound good though I am gonna try that!!! I have tried Van extract and Honey and Banana but not together and then made a strawberry banana smoothie with it!

I think the grains coming to the top is just the nature of the beast so to speak! Mine do it too and from everything I have read that is how it is supposed to be!! So I have not fought perfection I have just accepted that Is the way it is!!

I believe the mealworm-sourdough came from talk of cross contamination between cultures. Growing sourdough and meal worms on your counter and having them mix and mingle.
Though I use whey from both keifer and yogurt to start my veggie cultures since it makes it more likely I will grow the right type of bacteria with less salt needed.

Using the whey to start veggies is exactly what I'm hoping to do! You said you.just use canning jars? I would LOVE some recipes! Especially for gingered carrots....yum.

You think we can market it as some sort of uber health food?
We'd have to share profits with Ginny, though....I think the beast is growing in her kitchen!

BTW Ginny, do you have a link that talks about growing mealworms? I'm tired of buying them, and my girls require me to bribe them for love....I walk up empty handed and they are like "UM....Do we know you....?"

If anyone wants to try fermenting veggies, but the budget won't allow buying a Harsch crock, the Perfect Pickler is far less expensive way to start out, using a wide-mouth Mason jar. Or....you can go to a beer & winemaking supplies store and buy an air-lock.

To make saurkraut in smaller quantities, you won't really need a crock or air lock. In fact, my first batches were fermented in quart-size Mason jars with the lids screwed on very loosely and it worked out just fine. The downside to not using an air lock is the smell of fermenting veggies will scent your kitchen for a few days. If your dh starts sniffing around, just blame the smell on the dog!
