Not band. If you paint it white, white will reflect light, helping to add light to the face, etc.

Black actually doesn't reflect light.

Colors like blue or red, may reflect that color back onto the bird, giving it a coloring you wouldn't want.

Yeah, but the light colored chicks wont show up as well on a light colored background. Plus I kinda like that 'highlighted' look...

I'm in the process of planning a large photobox made out of plywood that will have lights on all three sides, since I've got more brooder lights than I know what to do with... LOL I want to make something large enough that I can take pictures of my adult birds. Someone mentioned some kind of reflective fabric, and that reminded me of those pop out light filters that professionals use. I used to have one when I was working for a photographer but I dont know what I did with it. I think I am going to try and find some fabric like that to use over the holes instead of the wax paper.

This has really struck my photography nerve and rekindled the interest. I was trained in high school, and then worked for a professional photographer for a while after I graduated, but I haven't shot anything 'professionally' in quite a long time. I've basically forgotten all my knowledge of the f-stops and all that good stuff. I'd love to set up a dark room and do things the old fashioned way!

Great tutorial, Chris.

If you add some aluminum foil in little flaps that come up from the bottom but has a hole for you to put your lens through, you can also bounce/reflect some more light to brighten up the shadowed areas.

Nicely done.
