Prolapse , please any advice

Prolapse not appeared since I popped it back in and 2 eggs laid since . Vet is looking into an implant for her but said as she’s not an expert in the field she is researching it and talking to people who are , so fingers crossed if she has it even in the short term it will give her time to properly heal .

Just watch her close that she doesn't develop an infection. I have one that had cloacitis and ended up prolapsing. I got her healed of the cloacitis and the prolapse shrunk back down (I used epsom salt soaks and Preperation H for the prolapse and Monistat for the cloacitis) but about a week later she got a secondary bacterial infection from the prolapse. Knowing what I know now I would have put her on a 2 week antibiotic. She has permanent damage from it and is now on implants for life. I could have prevented it had I known and feel bad for it. I didn't have a vet that would see ducks at the time and later found one.

I am watching her like a hawk , she’s eating and drinking normally and jumping in and out of her pools and seems her happy noisy self . What were the first signs of the bacterial infection , what should I be looking out for . I’m still waiting for the vet to get back to me , but they did give her something after the first prolapse to sort her insides out and presumably for any infection ! So hard at the moment as you can’t go in with them due to social distancing etc so they took her off me in the car park and I didn’t see her again till they brought her back out and she was that stressed half of what they told me I didn’t take in . Can you tell me a bit about implants , how often and some idea of cost ? Thanks , Annette
PS . Her poo’s are also back to normal after being loose after her visit to the vet

With Dudley, it was about a week after the cloacitis subsided , she developed another discharge (it was different than the cloacacitis) that would stick around her vent and it was trying to close off her vent. That's when I found the vet that would see ducks (she was a farm vet without much duck experience) but she gave her an antibiotic which helped but the discharge kept coming back and seemed stronger. I would clean her vent every night with Nolvasan scrub and gauze to keep her vent from closing. This discharge was like concrete it was unreal. Some nights I'd work on her over an hour scrubbing trying to keep her vent open that she could poo. I almost lost her Thanksgiving because she couldn't and she was giving up. In desperation I had to make her a catheter type device that I put in her vent. Worked like a champ and saved her. When the holiday was over I got her right back to the vet and she gave her a stronger antibiotic that finally worked. The discharge changed almost overnight with the stronger antibiotic to being able to remove it from her vent and then the discharge finally stopped. From the whole ordeal she has bad scar tissue around her vent that she could never lay another egg. The farm vet wouldn't give her the implants because they were considered off label. I found her a new vet who is experienced with exotics including Avian experience. She has been excellent. She didn't hesitate to give her the implant but they're a very small dose and they only last 2 months. They're $200.00 each. Very easy procedure. She gives her a shot to numb it and injects it in her back under the skin between her wings. It's smaller than a grain of rice. I have her looking into the Deslorin brand 4.7 mg dose so they'll last longer. I've heard depending on the size of the duck they can last 4-6 months. Sorry to write a book on this lol.

I wish I'd have found this group before all that happened with Dudley because I probably would have gotten the help she needed and it wouldn't have got as bad. You're right, I love this group and have already learned so much in my short time here. Everyone is so nice, very knowledgeable, and helpful. Best of luck with your girl! Just an update on Presley , she prolapsed again on Sunday , I managed to pop it back in , but then again this morning after laying and quite badly . She had an emergency appointment at the vets where they gave her an implant and managed to get the prolapse back in . Poor girl has been so stressed and has been in and out of her warm pool for most of the time since she got back home . I’ve read that she may go off colour about a week in and moult , any advice gained from Dudley or any other duck that’s had an implant ? Thanks in advance . I just don’t know if I’m doing the right thing by her but want to give her the best life she possibly can have . Thanks in advance of any advice

That’s great you got her the implant. Sometimes it takes a day or two to kick in so keep checking her abdomen to see if she has an egg. The dose Dudley is getting is very small and only lasts 2 months. I’m working on that with the vet. When she gets hers she’s only a day feeling under the weather and doesn’t put her into molt. The higher doses may. Did they give her an antibiotic?
