Prolapse? Won’t stay in and looks strange

She might have slight relapses. Not all prolapses stay in. When my girl had a small one, it took about a month to fully heal. And I had to put the prolapse in 3-4 times a day. Every time she pooped it would come back out. She also had a small calcified cyst that was causing the prolapse. Even my more minor ones occasionally will have relapses ever few days, especially if they are still laying eggs.

From your picture. It looks like there are two things going on. There is exterior tissue around her vent that has been damaged and she has a minor prolapse there. It looks the prolapse tissue is bruised. I would put her in a bath for a bit and then keep up the treatment. There is a good chance the bath will take care of a prolapse that small. You can put the hydrocortisone up her vent as well. I use gloves and just be gentle. Don't force anything.

That is essentially a scab. I am not entirely sure what causes it. My duck had that when she had vent gleet. She had some hard egg skins come out that cute her up. She had extra complications too because she couldn't move very well from a leg injury, so she was getting some acid burns there.

Well it’s been a little over a week and your suggestions worked great and she was doing fabulous - no prolapse issues at all! Until yesterday when she decided to do this…i applied prep h/antibitotic, etc and it’s MUCH harder to reinsert and I can see it’s causing her pain. She has been eating and drinking fine but I noticed she has started throwing her head onto her back and struggling to “swallow” water so am supplementing with vitamins as well. Spoke with another bird farmer (no vets in the area unfortunately) and they suggested we cull her at this point . She is now living in a large play pen in a heated area so she can hopefully be as comfortable as possible if she continues to decline.

I’m so sorry . I wonder if it could be some kind of cancerous tumor is it seem to be larger like it’s growing? Did you try giving her a dewormer, I would suggest five days of safeguard dewormer

I prefer the liquid goat, safeguard dewormer rather than the paste that is made for horses. It’s just easier to measure and administer the liquid kind.

I was wondering about a potential tumor as well. I don’t really want to cull her at this point, she’s still eating and enjoys attention/pets. Since the prolapse (or tumor, who knows) doesn’t go in and causes her pain if I try, I might just stop trying to force it and just leave it out.

That might be best, if nothing else is working. Plus, I'm thinking if the tissue is necrotic, trying to keep it inside might cause infection to spread internally? Unsure...

Just keep her comfortable. Pay attention to her quality of life. When she's having more bad days than good ones, then it's time to cull.

That tissue doesn't look necrotic to me, but it isn't healthy. It is prolapsed tissue. I would likely guess she got a bad bacterial infection. She was pretty badly scabbed up that, I wouldn't be surprised if she got sepsis and it spread to the rest of her body.

Did you ever order the antibiotic I listed previously? If not, then it would probably be too late at this point. But that would have been the last thing I would have done, while tube feeding to keep her alive to see if they helped. Without that stuff, culling may be the best option, because she won't last long without drinking and eating. It is also very possible something else could be going on.

I ordered enrofloxacin, but it has not arrived yet (expected tomorrow), but not sure if that will help at that point. She is not doing well this afternoon so I am just working to make her comfortable and letting her sleep. It’s sad and she’s the first duck I’ve had issues with, but I feel like I have tried everything I could to help.

You have definitely the best you can for her. Most of the health issues I have with my ducks tends to be the same ones over and over again. Welshies, runners, Pekin, and khaki Campbells have had the most issues for me. They lay more eggs, so more issues.

You can try tube feeding her if you want. I would just start off with fluids like Gatorade. But I can understand it may be putting a lot of effort into something that may not help at all.

A lot of the supplies you can get at stores, like TSC. You can use aquarium tubing and melt the end in a pinch.
