Proof that staples are not enough!

Was there any blood/feathers present? Any signs of carnage? If your friend lives near you I would suggest a game camera near your coop. That is making me paranoid about our coop!
 
I agree, definitely looks like it was cut. However, the advice about screws and washers is good. I had to learn the hard way.
 
I use a regular barbwire staple and never had a problem. this shows that the hardware cloth tore first

Even if it were possible to rip hardware cloth, I doubt it would rip in a straight diagonal like that. There is no consistancy with any weak points. Look closely at the picture - the cuts sometimes are at the joins, and sometimes not. A tear would follow one or the other. Either that was cut with tools or the hardware cloth was previously cut, and the the tears were made by ripping away whatever it had been patched with.
 
Raccoons are undeniably clever and agile creatures, and I've seen them do significant damage--but these cuts are simply too straight and perfect. They do not look torn, they look cut.
