There's NO WAY any 4-legged animal did that, and the staples held anyway

I use a regular barbwire staple and never had a problem. this shows that the hardware cloth tore first

they way it is tore looks to me more like cuts then rips and tears

Even if it were possible to rip hardware cloth, I doubt it would rip in a straight diagonal like that. There is no consistancy with any weak points. Look closely at the picture - the cuts sometimes are at the joins, and sometimes not. A tear would follow one or the other. Either that was cut with tools or the hardware cloth was previously cut, and the the tears were made by ripping away whatever it had been patched with.
